The best washable dog blanket for a bed is one that covers the area your dog uses, fits your washer, and has care instructions you can follow. Choose a waterproof-backed option if you need a barrier against damp paws, drool, or small spills; otherwise, a washable soft layer may be all you need. Measure first, then compare the exact model’s dimensions and wash-and-dry label.
How to choose a dog blanket for your bed
Measure the area you want to protect
Measure the part of the bed where your dog sleeps, not just the dog. Decide whether the blanket should cover only that spot or extend farther to protect the end of the bed. Vetstreet notes that larger blankets may work over a bed’s end; check the product’s dimensions against your intended coverage before buying: Vetstreet’s guide to waterproof dog blankets.
Choose waterproofing for a specific need
A waterproof layer can be useful if you want a barrier against damp paws, drool, or small spills. It is not essential for every dog or household. If your priority is a washable layer rather than moisture protection, compare ordinary blankets too. Product labels alone do not establish how well a blanket performs in practice.
Check care instructions and washer capacity
Follow the current care label for the exact model; washing and drying directions differ, and manufacturer instructions take precedence over general advice. Consider the blanket’s thickness and size as well as its fit on the bed. A bulky blanket may be difficult to wash in your household machine or may take longer to dry. Animals Matter’s buying guide also emphasizes product-specific care and sizing: Animals Matter’s waterproof dog blanket guide.
