There is no official, universally ranked list of the world’s best zoos. This guide presents 25 picks from Travel + Leisure’s July 2026 shortlist, with options for wildlife conservation, animal encounters, education, distinctive habitats, and different kinds of trips.
Use the comparison below to find a starting point, then check the zoo’s own website for current admission, hours, accessibility, exhibits, and special experiences. Accreditation can help you assess an institution against a professional body’s standards, but it is not a global ranking or a complete verdict on animal welfare.

How to use this list
This is a curated shortlist, not an official or methodologically ranked global top 25. The picks and descriptions are drawn from Travel + Leisure’s article, updated July 18, 2026; they are not based on first-hand visits for this guide. Compare institutions by your interests and practical needs, including conservation and research, animal welfare, habitat design, educational programs, location, admission, accessibility, and the availability of particular experiences.
Accreditation is one useful point of reference, not a league table. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) says accreditation occurs every five years. Its statistics page reported 254 accredited zoos, aquariums, and related facilities in 12 countries as of March 2026. Those figures describe AZA, not all zoos worldwide or the 25 picks below. National Geographic Traveller identifies WAZA, AZA, EAZA, and BIAZA as relevant professional bodies across regions.

Conservation, accreditation, and animal welfare
Accreditation can tell you whether an institution has been reviewed against a particular organization’s standards; it does not directly compare every zoo worldwide. AZA reported that its accredited members spent $372.4 million on field conservation in 2025, benefiting 1,200 species and subspecies, including 480 listed as threatened on the IUCN Red List. These are AZA-wide figures, not totals for the 25 zoos in this guide and not proof of any individual animal’s experience.
When evaluating a zoo, look for specific, current information about how it cares for animals, supports conservation, and educates visitors. Consider whether the institution describes its veterinary care, enrichment, research, field partners, and the outcomes of conservation work. No single accreditation badge or promotional claim answers every welfare question.

FAQ
Are these zoos ranked from best to worst?
No. This is a curated list based on Travel + Leisure’s 2026 article, not an official ranking or a measured comparison of all zoos worldwide. The right choice depends on your interests and trip needs.
Which zoos are best for wildlife conservation?
Travel + Leisure highlights conservation or research at several of these institutions, including San Diego Zoo, Chester Zoo, Toronto Zoo, Bronx Zoo, Taronga Zoo, and Saint Louis Zoo. Compare current, zoo-specific information about projects and outcomes rather than assuming every zoo has the same programs.
Does accreditation prove that a zoo is ethical?
No. Accreditation indicates review against a particular organization’s standards, but it is not a global ranking or a guarantee that every person will agree with every animal-care or collection decision. Check current status and read about the institution’s practices and conservation work.

Consider the child’s interests and age, walking distances, accessibility, weather, and whether talks or special experiences are available. Check age requirements and booking details for keeper or animal experiences before making plans.
Should I plan a visit around a particular animal?
Only after checking the zoo’s current information, and even then, have a backup plan. Animal visibility and program availability can change, and special experiences may have separate schedules or booking terms.
