Biewer Terrier Puppy Buying Guide: Breeder Questions and Health Checks

Before reserving a Biewer Terrier puppy, verify four documented health screens for both parents, match every result to the correct dog, ask precise breeder questions, and plan for daily brushing.

The safest way to buy a Biewer Terrier puppy is to choose a breeder who can show identifiable, dated health records for both parents—not one who simply says the dogs are “health tested.” The Biewer Terrier Club of America (BTCA) health statement approved on December 17, 2025 identifies four CHIC screening items: an ACVO eye examination, PRA-PRCD DNA test, PLL DNA test, and veterinary patellar-luxation evaluation. Ask to see each result, confirm which dog it belongs to, and check public OFA records where available. Health screening reduces avoidable risk, but it cannot promise that a puppy will never develop disease.

This guide gives you a practical document checklist, precise questions for breeders, ways to compare litters, and the coat-care commitment described by the American Kennel Club (AKC). The official breed standard can help you recognize a Biewer Terrier’s intended appearance, but appearance should never outweigh health, temperament, and breeder transparency.

What responsible Biewer Terrier screening should include

The current BTCA statement separates core CHIC screening from additional tests. That distinction matters: a breeder may truthfully say a dog has had “health testing” while omitting one of the club’s required items or failing to provide the actual results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
BTCA CHIC screening item What to request Important detail
ACVO eye examination A written report from a board-certified ACVO ophthalmologist BTCA recommends an examination before breeding and evaluations at 1, 3, and 6 years of age.
PRA-PRCD DNA test The laboratory result naming the tested parent and the test performed Ask for the result itself rather than a verbal statement that the dog is clear.
PLL DNA test The laboratory result tied to the parent’s registered name or permanent identifier Confirm that the report is for the actual sire or dam of the litter.
Patellar luxation veterinary evaluation The veterinarian’s evaluation and the dog’s identifying information Do not substitute a general wellness examination for a documented patellar evaluation.

These are screening recommendations and program requirements, not a guarantee of a disease-free puppy. A result is useful only when you can connect it to the correct dog and understand what was tested.

The four required checks, explained

ACVO eye examination

An ACVO examination is performed by a board-certified ophthalmologist. Ask the breeder when each parent was examined, request the report, and check whether the examination occurred before the breeding. The BTCA recommends repeat evaluations at 1, 3, and 6 years, so an older dog may have more than one report. A breeder who can explain the dates and provide the specialist’s documentation is giving you substantially more information than someone who uses the phrase “eyes tested.”

Read the report’s identity details carefully. The registered name, microchip number, tattoo, or another permanent identifier should match the parent listed in the litter paperwork. If a result is recorded in a public OFA database, use the identifying information to find the corresponding entry. A database entry that cannot be tied to the sire or dam is not adequate verification.

PRA-PRCD DNA test

Progressive retinal atrophy, progressive rod-cone degeneration (PRA-PRCD), is screened through DNA testing. For buying purposes, the critical question is not merely whether a breeder says a dog is “clear,” but whether you can see the laboratory report for that specific parent. Ask which laboratory performed the test, the date, the dog’s registered name, and the reported result. Keep a copy with your puppy records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DNA results describe the tested dog’s status for that variant; they do not replace an eye examination or cover every possible eye disorder. That is why the BTCA lists the DNA test and the ACVO examination as separate items.

PLL DNA test

Primary lens luxation (PLL) screening also uses DNA testing. Request the same level of documentation: the report, laboratory, test date, and an identifier that matches the parent. If the breeder supplies a certificate under a call name only, ask for the registered name or microchip number so you can ensure it is not a different dog with a similar name.

Do not infer a puppy’s complete eye-health outlook from a single DNA result. PLL testing addresses the tested genetic variant; it does not make the other screening items unnecessary.

Patellar-luxation evaluation

Patellar luxation is assessed by a veterinarian rather than by a DNA laboratory. Ask for the written evaluation for each parent and the date it was performed. The document should identify the dog and state the recorded finding. A breeder should be able to tell you whether the evaluation was done as part of a formal screening program or during another veterinary visit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because a casual statement such as “the knees are fine” is not a record, treat missing paperwork as missing evidence. Ask whether the same dog has had follow-up evaluations and request those records when they exist.

How to inspect a breeder’s paperwork

Request records for both parents

Ask for the four CHIC items for the sire and the dam, not just for one parent or for an older relative. If the sire belongs to another kennel, the breeder should still be able to provide his records or direct you to the owner who can. A pedigree alone does not establish health-screening status.

Match every result to the correct dog

Compare the name, registration information, microchip number, or other identifier on each report with the parent named in the proposed litter. Resolve spelling differences and call-name abbreviations before placing a deposit. When the breeder says a result is “pending,” ask when it was performed, what remains outstanding, and whether the breeding occurred before the result was available.

Check dates and specialists

For eye examinations, confirm that the clinician is a board-certified ACVO ophthalmologist and note the examination date. For DNA tests, record the laboratory and date. For patellar evaluations, identify the examining veterinarian and date. Dates let you distinguish current records from certificates produced many years earlier without follow-up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use independent verification where available

The BTCA health-resources page directs owners toward OFA and screening information. Search public OFA records when an entry is available, using the parent’s registered name and identifiers. An OFA listing is a useful cross-check, but it does not replace asking the breeder for the underlying report or clarifying a result that is not listed publicly.

Questions to ask before you reserve a puppy

Send questions in writing so the answers can be compared and saved with your records. A transparent breeder should not object to reasonable requests for documentation.

  • Can I see the ACVO eye, patellar, PRA-PRCD, and PLL results for both parents?
  • What are the registered names, registration numbers, microchip numbers, or other permanent identifiers on each result?
  • When were the eye examinations performed, and were they conducted by a board-certified ACVO ophthalmologist?
  • Do the parents have public OFA records, and can you show me how to match those entries to the dogs?
  • Which optional tests have you performed, and what information influenced that choice?
  • What eye, orthopedic, or other health problems have occurred in the parents, siblings, offspring, or close relatives?
  • What temperament information can you share about the parents and previous offspring?
  • How are puppies raised, handled, and introduced to ordinary household experiences?
  • What veterinary examinations, vaccinations, parasite treatments, and identification will be completed before the puppy leaves?
  • What written health terms, return provisions, and ongoing support do you provide? Ask how these terms apply in your jurisdiction rather than assuming any clause is legally required.
  • Will you remain available if my veterinarian finds a concern after the puppy comes home?

Notice how these questions ask for evidence and context rather than a guarantee. “All relevant health testing” is a buyer’s informal phrase, not a defined checklist; ask the breeder to name every test and provide its result.

Optional BTCA tests: useful information, different status

The BTCA lists several tests as optional. Optional does not mean pointless, and required does not mean sufficient to predict every future problem. Ask what the breeder tested, whether results are available for both parents, and how the findings influenced the pairing.

  • Cardiac evaluation: Ask what type of evaluation was performed, by whom, and on what date.
  • Legg-Calve-Perthes radiographic evaluation: Request the radiographic report or official result and the dog’s identifier.
  • Serum bile acid: Ask for the laboratory report and the circumstances of testing, since interpretation depends on the veterinary context.
  • Degenerative myelopathy: Request the DNA result, laboratory, date, and parent identification.
  • Hyperuricosuria: Request the DNA result and confirm which parent it belongs to.

Do not let a long list of optional certificates obscure a missing CHIC item. First establish that both parents have the four core records; then consider how additional testing improves your understanding of that particular family.

What health testing can—and cannot—tell you

Screening lowers uncertainty by identifying particular findings or genetic variants. It does not test every gene, rule out every condition, or guarantee a puppy’s future. A DNA result applies to the variant and dog named on the report. An eye examination is a snapshot taken on a particular date. A patellar evaluation records the finding at the time of examination. Your puppy can still need routine veterinary care and may develop an issue that was not covered by these screens.

The BTCA describes the breed as relatively young and notes few known health issues in qualitative terms. That statement is not a numerical prevalence estimate, so it should not be used to claim that a specific percentage of Biewer Terriers will or will not develop a disease. Ask about the breeder’s own family history and follow-up experience instead of relying on a population number that has not been established.

Be wary of absolute promises such as “this line can never have eye disease” or “the certificate guarantees a healthy dog.” A responsible breeder explains the scope and limits of each test, discloses known problems, and offers written support without pretending that biology is risk-free.

Breed appearance: use the standard, not marketing photos

The BTCA official standard describes the Biewer Terrier as “an elegant, longhaired, tri-colored toy terrier with a distinctive, breed signature ponytail.” It specifies black or blue and white body coloring and says a solid dog of either color is undesirable. These details help you understand the intended breed type, but they are not substitutes for health records or a stable temperament.

Ask to see clear photographs or videos of the parents and, when possible, meet them. Look for a clean, comfortable environment and a dog that can settle and interact normally, rather than judging a puppy solely by coat pattern or a posed image. A fashionable marking cannot compensate for missing documentation.

Coat care is a daily responsibility

The AKC states that the Biewer Terrier’s long coat requires daily brushing. Plan for a routine from the puppy’s first weeks at home: brief, calm sessions, gentle handling of the legs and tail, and rewards for cooperation. A brush designed for long coats is a sensible starting category; ask the breeder which tools and techniques the puppy already knows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Daily brushing is not just cosmetic. It lets you find tangles, skin irritation, burrs, or changes in the body early. Work in small sections, avoid pulling through mats, and ask a groomer or veterinarian to demonstrate safe technique if you encounter a difficult knot. Keep the ponytail area and furnishings comfortable rather than tight, and introduce nail, ear, and paw handling gradually.

A step-by-step buying process

  1. Define your evidence standard. Write down the four BTCA CHIC items and decide that you will see records for both parents before committing.
  2. Request the document packet. Ask for the ACVO, PRA-PRCD, PLL, and patellar results, plus identifiers and dates. Request optional-test records separately.
  3. Verify identities. Match every report to the sire or dam named for the litter. Check public OFA information where applicable.
  4. Ask follow-up questions. Clarify missing dates, specialists, laboratories, unclear findings, and any health or temperament history in close relatives.
  5. Discuss the puppy’s rearing. Ask how puppies are handled, what household experiences they receive, and how the breeder assesses temperament.
  6. Review written terms. Read the health agreement, return provisions, identification details, veterinary schedule, and support commitments before paying a deposit.
  7. Meet or observe the family. When possible, see the mother and her environment. If an in-person visit is impossible, request live video and unedited records rather than relying only on promotional images.
  8. Have your veterinarian ready. Arrange an initial appointment and bring every record supplied by the breeder. Your veterinarian can explain what follow-up examinations are appropriate for the individual puppy.
  9. Save a complete file. Keep copies of the contracts, test reports, vaccination and parasite records, microchip information, pedigree, and all written communications.

Warning signs that justify slowing down or walking away

  • The breeder will not name the tests, show reports, or identify which parent was tested.
  • Only one parent has records, or the certificates belong to dogs with different names and no explanation.
  • An eye “check” was performed by an unspecified person rather than a board-certified ACVO ophthalmologist.
  • The breeder says OFA verification is unnecessary but cannot provide primary reports.
  • Results are promised after you pay, or questions about dates and laboratories are treated as unreasonable.
  • Optional certificates are showcased while one of the four CHIC items is missing.
  • The breeder guarantees a perfect puppy or dismisses known health concerns in relatives.
  • You are pressured to decide immediately, discouraged from consulting your veterinarian, or denied written terms.

One incomplete document may have an innocent explanation, but a pattern of evasiveness is itself useful information. Pause the transaction until the record is clear.

Prepare for the first weeks at home

Bring the breeder’s records to your veterinarian and ask which examinations, vaccinations, parasite-control steps, and follow-up tests fit the puppy’s age and history. Keep the puppy’s registered identity consistent across veterinary, microchip, insurance, and licensing records so future health results can be traced correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Continue the breeder’s food and grooming routine initially, then make changes gradually with veterinary advice. Schedule short daily grooming sessions, provide safe opportunities for rest and play, and monitor appetite, stool, skin, eyes, movement, and behavior. Contact your veterinarian promptly for signs of illness rather than waiting for a guarantee or a later paperwork review.

The best purchase decision is therefore documentary and practical: verified screening for both parents, candid answers about the family, written support, and a realistic plan for daily coat care. The Biewer Terrier’s distinctive look is part of its appeal, but the records and the breeder’s conduct tell you far more about the quality of the decision you are making.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the four BTCA CHIC items a guarantee that my Biewer Terrier puppy will be healthy?

No. They screen for specified findings and variants in the tested parents. They do not cover every disease, and a result is meaningful only for the identified dog and test date.

How recent should a Biewer Terrier eye examination be?

The BTCA recommends an examination before breeding and evaluations at 1, 3, and 6 years. Ask for the actual report and discuss the dates with your veterinarian.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if a breeder says the parents are health tested but will not share certificates?

Treat the claim as unverified. Ask for the named reports, identifiers, dates, specialists or laboratories, and public OFA verification where available before reserving a puppy.

Is daily brushing really necessary for this breed?

Yes. The AKC says the Biewer Terrier’s long coat requires daily brushing. Begin short, gentle sessions early so grooming remains routine rather than an emergency after mats form.
