Neither breed is a universal winner. A Biewer Terrier may suit a household that likes a distinctive tri-colored toy terrier and an alert, eager breed profile. A Maltese may suit someone drawn to a long white coat and a playful, charming, gentle companion description. In both cases, the practical decision starts with the same commitment: daily brushing, regular professional or at-home coat care, careful handling and breed-specific health screening.
Use the comparison below to match those requirements—and the individual dog you meet—to your household rather than choosing by appearance alone.

Biewer Terrier or Maltese at a glance
Both are very small companion dogs with long coats. The figures below come from American Kennel Club breed profiles accessed in 2026, except where the Biewer Terrier Club of America standard is identified separately. A profile estimate is not a promise about an individual dog.

The strongest dividing line in the available information is not a proven difference in trainability, exercise needs or family safety. It is the combination of coat preference, grooming routine and the temperament of the individual dog.

How big do Biewer Terriers and Maltese get?
Biewer Terrier size
The AKC Biewer Terrier profile lists an adult height of 7–11 inches and a weight of 4–8 pounds. The current Biewer Terrier Club of America standard gives 8–10 inches at the withers as the ideal height and identifies height over 11 inches as a serious fault. The ideal in a show standard and the broader range in a general breed profile serve different purposes, so do not treat either as a guarantee for a puppy.
Maltese size
The AKC Maltese profile lists 7–9 inches and a weight under 7 pounds. That makes the Maltese similarly small, with little margin for a fall, being stepped on or rough play. Ask a breeder for the parents’ adult sizes and your veterinarian’s advice about safe handling; a puppy’s current weight does not by itself predict its final build precisely.
What the size difference means for daily life
- Set up low-traffic resting areas where a dog cannot be knocked from furniture or underfoot.
- Use two hands to lift a toy dog, supporting the chest and hindquarters.
- Teach children to sit on the floor for handling and to stop when the dog moves away.
- Keep doors, stairways and outdoor gates secure; a tiny dog can pass through gaps that would contain a larger breed.
The cited sources do not establish a comparative size advantage for apartments, first-time owners or particular family types. Those decisions depend on the dog, training, socialization and the household’s ability to supervise.

There is no low-maintenance choice here. AKC advises daily brushing for both breeds. The right question is whether your household can perform a gentle daily routine and budget for bathing, trimming and professional help when a coat becomes difficult to manage.
Biewer Terrier grooming
The Biewer Terrier has a long, silky, tri-colored coat. The Biewer Terrier Club of America standard describes it as straight and without an undercoat. AKC warns that soft coats may mat and recommends daily brushing. AKC also notes that a short-coated pet trim can require less grooming. That trim is an optional management choice, not a claim that every Biewer should be clipped or that clipping eliminates coat care.

- Check the coat every day, especially behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar and at the tail.
- Work in small sections with a small-dog slicker or pin brush suited to the dog’s coat and tolerance.
- Separate tangles gently rather than pulling through a mat; ask a groomer to handle tight mats or advise on technique.
- Schedule bathing, drying and trimming often enough to keep the skin visible and the coat free of painful tangles.
Maltese grooming
The Maltese profile calls for gentle daily brushing and combing all the way to the skin to prevent tangles and mats. It also recommends regular baths and conditioning, regular nail trims and weekly ear checks. Frequent tooth brushing is advised. If tear staining becomes excessive, discuss it with a veterinarian instead of assuming that a cosmetic product is the answer.
- Brush and comb to the skin, using gentle pressure and checking that the comb reaches through the coat.
- Keep the coat clean and completely dry after bathing; damp tangles can tighten quickly.
- Inspect ears weekly, trim nails routinely and establish a tooth-brushing habit early.
- Ask a groomer to demonstrate a safe face, feet and sanitary trim if you are maintaining a pet-length coat.
How to decide whether grooming will work for you
- Choose the routine, not the photograph: long coats look different after rain, play and missed brushing.
- Consider handling tolerance: the best brush is one the dog accepts without fear or repeated restraint.
- Plan for setbacks: illness, travel or a busy week can turn a missed session into a serious mat.
- Get professional instruction: a qualified groomer can match tools and techniques to the individual coat.
Neither profile establishes that one breed sheds less, needs less exercise or is easier to keep in a particular home. Do not use those assumptions as a substitute for meeting the dog and planning the care schedule.
Temperament and personality
What the Biewer standard says
The Biewer Terrier Club of America standard states, “The Biewer Terrier is alert and eager.” It also says, “Intelligent and loyal, they are affectionate and playful, making them excellent companions and family dogs.” Those sentences describe the standard’s ideal breed temperament. They do not predict how every individual will respond to strangers, children, other animals, grooming or being left alone.
What the Maltese profile says
AKC characterizes the Maltese as a playful, charming and gentle companion. That wording is useful as a starting point, but it is not a behavioral guarantee. A Maltese can still be fearful, overexcited or uncomfortable with handling if it has had poor socialization or a stressful early environment.
Evaluate the individual dog
Ask to see the dog in ordinary situations rather than relying only on a breed label. Observe whether it can recover after a mild surprise, accept calm touch on its paws and ears, engage with a person without frantic behavior and settle after play. Ask the breeder, rescue organization or foster caregiver how the dog behaves around grooming, visitors, children and other animals. An adult dog can offer a more observable temperament, while a puppy’s future behavior remains less certain.

Children, handling and supervision
Both breeds are toy-sized. AKC cautions that dogs should be supervised around young children, and the available sources do not show that either breed is categorically safer or better for families. A child’s age, the dog’s history, adult supervision and the home’s physical setup matter more than a simple breed verdict.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA safe household plan
- Keep an adult within reach whenever a young child and dog share space.
- Do not allow carrying, squeezing, chasing, tail pulling or taking food and toys.
- Provide a gated retreat where the dog can sleep undisturbed.
- Teach children to invite interaction and to stop when the dog turns away, freezes, growls or seeks distance.
- Use a harness fitted by a professional or veterinarian if a collar places pressure on the dog’s neck.
If your household cannot maintain this supervision, neither breed is an appropriate automatic choice simply because it is small or described as gentle.
Health screening to request from a breeder
AKC lists different recommended screening areas for each breed. These are screening recommendations reported on the breed profiles, not diagnoses, guarantees or a complete clinical assessment. Request dated documentation, ask which parent each result belongs to and have your own veterinarian review the records.
| Breed | Screening listed by AKC | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Biewer Terrier | Eye examination by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist; patellar luxation screening; primary lens luxation DNA test; PRA-prcd DNA test | Which laboratory or specialist performed each test? Are the results for both parents? What do the findings mean for this litter? |
| Maltese | Patella evaluation; cardiac examination; serum bile-acid testing | When were the examinations performed? Were both parents tested? Can my veterinarian verify the documents and explain any abnormal finding? |
Why screening is worth checking
Testing can identify risks that are difficult to judge from a puppy’s appearance. It also shows whether a breeder is following the screening priorities associated with the breed. A clear result does not promise lifelong health, and an absent record is a reason to ask more questions rather than assume the dog is affected.
Biewer health information beyond individual test results
The Biewer Terrier Club of America maintains health-education and research material. Its health page references a 2024 gastrointestinal survey summary that the club says was formally reviewed in May 2026, as well as a 2026 health-priorities survey. Those listings do not establish population-wide prevalence rates. Use them as prompts for a candid discussion with a breeder and your veterinarian, not as a diagnosis or a statistical prediction for one puppy.

Breed identity and changing standards
The Biewer Terrier Club of America standard describes a long-haired, tri-colored toy terrier with a distinctive ponytail, a silky straight coat without an undercoat and an alert, eager temperament. The standard was approved February 5, 2026 and became effective April 30, 2026. It gives 8–10 inches as the ideal height and treats height over 11 inches as a serious fault.
The Maltese official standard appears in the American Kennel Club Toy Group standards document. For everyday grooming, profile size, life-expectancy figures and recommended health tests, the AKC Maltese breed profile is the more direct source in this comparison. Show standards can change, so consult the current standard of the registry involved if you are evaluating conformation details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision framework
Answer these questions before contacting breeders or adoption groups. A “no” does not automatically rule out a breed, but it identifies a problem to solve first.
- Can everyone commit to daily brushing? Include weekends, travel and periods when the coat is growing out.
- Can the home safely manage a very small dog? Look at stairs, furniture, doors, children’s play and other pets.
- Which appearance will you still like after maintenance is considered? The Biewer is distinctly tri-colored; the Maltese has a long white coat.
- Which broad temperament description fits your preference? The Biewer standard emphasizes alert and eager; the Maltese profile emphasizes playful, charming and gentle.
- Will you verify breed-specific screening? Decide in advance which records you will request and whether your veterinarian will review them.
- Would an adult dog be a better match? An adult’s established behavior can make household-fit decisions more concrete than a puppy’s predicted temperament.
Questions to ask before bringing one home
Questions for a Biewer Terrier breeder
- Can you provide the eye, patella, PLL and PRA-prcd results listed for the parents?
- How does each parent respond to brushing, bathing, nail care and veterinary handling?
- What coat length do you maintain on the adults, and what daily routine does it require?
- How have the puppies been socialized to people, household sounds and gentle handling?
Questions for a Maltese breeder
- Can you provide patella, cardiac and serum bile-acid records for the parents?
- How do the adults behave during combing, bathing, ear checks, nail trims and tooth brushing?
- What steps are taken to keep the white coat and skin healthy, and how are tear-staining concerns handled?
- What have you observed about each puppy’s confidence, recovery and response to handling?
Questions for a rescue or foster organization
- What is known about the dog’s previous homes and medical history?
- Has the dog been observed around children, visitors, dogs or cats, and under what conditions?
- How does the dog react to brushing, mat removal, nail handling and veterinary care?
- What support is available if the dog’s behavior or coat needs exceed your initial expectations?
Common mistakes when choosing between these breeds
Choosing by coat color alone
A striking coat does not tell you whether the dog accepts grooming or whether your schedule can sustain it. Meet the dog, handle the coat gently and ask to see the parents or foster notes when possible.

Assuming screening means certainty
Recommended tests improve the information available to you, but they do not cover every illness or guarantee a particular lifespan. Keep a relationship with a veterinarian after adoption.
Underestimating small-dog injury risk
Small size does not make a dog indestructible. Build supervision, safe lifting and a retreat into the household plan before the dog arrives.
The bottom-line choice
Choose a Biewer Terrier if its tri-colored terrier appearance and the standard’s alert, eager, affectionate and playful description appeal to you—and you are prepared for daily brushing and the breed-specific screening questions. Choose a Maltese if its long white coat and playful, charming, gentle companion profile fit your preference—and you can provide daily brushing to the skin, conditioning, dental care, ear checks and regular grooming.
If both descriptions appeal to you, let the individual dog decide the final step. Meet more than one, observe handling and recovery, verify the appropriate health records and choose the household routine you can maintain for the dog’s entire life.
