Iowa officials announced highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a commercial turkey flock in Cherokee County on June 2, 2024. It was the second Iowa poultry detection announced in a week: a commercial layer flock in Sioux County had been reported on May 28.

Where and when was the second Iowa flock affected?

The June 2, 2024, joint announcement from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) and USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) identified HPAI in a commercial turkey flock in Cherokee County. The earlier detection, announced May 28, was in a commercial layer flock in Sioux County. The phrase “second flock in a week” refers to the order and timing of those announcements, not to a claim that these were the only affected flocks in the state.

IDALS and USDA APHIS’s June 2 announcement said the virus can travel in wild birds that do not appear sick and is often fatal to domestic birds, including chickens and turkeys.

How many birds were reported?

Iowa Capital Dispatch’s June 3 report estimated about 103,000 turkeys in the Cherokee County flock. USDA APHIS’s incident listing gives 100,000 birds for the Iowa commercial turkey meat incident. These are different reported figures, so the flock size should be described as approximate rather than as a settled exact count.

The same Iowa Capital Dispatch report put the earlier Sioux County layer flock at about 4.2 million egg-laying chickens. That figure describes the May 28 detection, not the Cherokee County turkey flock.

What did officials later report about the virus?

In a June 25, 2024 update, IDALS said sequencing of virus from the Cherokee County turkey flock was consistent with the variant identified in affected dairies in other states. This was a later laboratory finding; it was not part of the original June 3 news report.

In that update, IDALS strongly encouraged Iowa poultry producers and dairy farmers to strengthen biosecurity practices and protocols. The statement was general advice for producers, not a finding that established how this particular flock became infected.

What the 2024 report does—and does not—tell you

The detections and later sequencing update document events from May and June 2024. They do not establish Iowa’s current bird-flu situation in October 2026. For present-day status, consult current state or USDA surveillance updates rather than treating this historical report as an active outbreak alert.

The contemporary report said whole flocks are culled to help prevent spread and described wild birds as a principal source of infection in domestic flocks. Those are general outbreak-control and transmission points reported at the time, not evidence about the precise source of infection at the Cherokee County farm.
