A blue Bengal is a Bengal cat with a blue-gray coat category—not necessarily blue eyes. The coat can range from pale blue-gray to slate, and its markings may be spotted, rosetted or marbled. Registry standards also recognize specialized blue forms, including silver, lynx point, mink, sepia, melanistic and smoke. The breed traces to domestic-cat and Asian leopard cat crosses; its recognition milestones differ by registry.
What does a blue Bengal look like?
“Blue” describes the coat’s color category. The ground color, markings, pattern and eye-color criteria vary by category, so two blue Bengals may look quite different. The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) 2026 standard provides the descriptions below.

| Color category | Ground color and markings | Eye color in the CFA standard |
|---|---|---|
| Blue tabby | Pale blue-gray to slate blue-gray ground, with medium-to-darker blue markings; the underside and chest are lighter, and dark-blue pigment outlines the eyes and lips. | Any color other than blue. |
| Blue silver tabby | Light blue-silver ground with blue-gray markings. | Gold to green. |
| Blue lynx point | Ivory-to-cream ground with blue-to-slate markings and points. | Blue. |
| Blue mink tabby | Ivory-to-rich-cream ground with medium-to-dark slate-blue markings. | Aqua. |
| Blue sepia tabby | Ground color from medium tan to medium blue, darker blue markings and warm fawn overtones. | Green-gold. |
| Blue melanistic | A blue form with faint or ghost-like patterning. | Not specified in the CFA description summarized here. |
| Blue smoke | A blue form with a whitish undercoat. | Not specified in the CFA description summarized here. |
These are registry color descriptions, not a way to confirm a cat’s registration or pedigree from a photograph. In particular, blue coat color does not automatically mean blue eyes: CFA specifies blue eyes for blue lynx points, but not for blue tabbies. See CFA’s 2026 Bengal standard for the full standard.

How to compare blue Bengal pictures
When looking at pictures, identify the color category before comparing shades. A blue silver tabby, for example, has a different ground color from a blue tabby, while a lynx point has an ivory-to-cream ground and blue eyes under the CFA standard.

- Ground color: Note whether the background reads as blue-gray, silver, cream or another described tone.
- Markings and contrast: Compare the markings’ color and how strongly they stand out from the ground.
- Pattern: Look for a spotted or rosetted presentation versus a marbled one. A blue coat can appear with different pattern layouts.
- Eye color: Consider it alongside the named color category rather than assuming every blue Bengal has blue eyes.
- Specialized traits: Check whether the description identifies silver, point, melanistic or smoke features.
Lighting and camera processing can shift gray-blue tones, so one image is not a definitive color test. For clear picture captions, name the color category and pattern when known rather than labeling every gray-looking coat simply “blue.”
Where did Bengal cats come from?
The Bengal name refers to the Asian leopard cat’s scientific name, Prionailurus bengalensis. The breed developed through crosses between domestic cats and Asian leopard cats, followed by selective breeding. The history is not a single registry’s timeline: TICA and CFA record different recognition milestones.

| Registry milestone | Date | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| Jean Sugden’s early Asian leopard cat and domestic cat crosses | 1963 | Recorded in TICA’s history timeline. |
| TICA accepted Bengals as a new breed | 1986 | A TICA breed-acceptance milestone. |
| TICA vote to name the crosses “Bengal Cats” | 1988 | A naming milestone in TICA’s timeline. |
| TICA championship status began | May 1, 1991 | A TICA show-status milestone. |
| CFA accepted Bengals for registration | 2016 | CFA required five generations of pure domestic ancestry for registration. |
| CFA championship status | 2018 | A separate CFA show-status milestone. |
These dates describe different steps and different registries; they should not be combined into one universal “recognition year.” TICA’s timeline also records 5,000 Bengal cats registered in a single year in 2005 and 8,000 in a single year in 2014. Those are historical registration milestones, not current population counts, and neither gives the number of blue Bengals. TICA’s Bengal history timeline and CFA’s Bengal breed history provide the respective registry accounts.

What are Bengals like, and what care do they need?
Activity and enrichment
TICA describes Bengals as energetic, intelligent and curious. Climbing opportunities, exploration, interactive play and mental activity can help meet those tendencies; puzzle toys are one possible enrichment option. Breed descriptions are general tendencies, not guarantees about an individual cat’s personality or needs.

Coat care
CFA describes the Bengal coat as soft and silky, and unlikely to mat. It recommends brushing weekly with a soft-bristled brush. Bathing should not usually be necessary; for show preparation, CFA advises asking the breeder about suitable products and procedure.
Health screening to discuss with a breeder
TICA says breeders should test for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and PK-deficiency. CFA notes that HCM requires an echocardiogram to detect and that breeders may have breeding cats scanned by a cardiologist. Ask what screening was performed and request the relevant records. These are breeder-screening considerations, not a diagnosis or a health guarantee for an individual cat.

What to keep in mind when choosing or identifying one
- Use “blue Bengal” to describe a coat category, not an eye color.
- Distinguish the color category from the pattern: spotted or rosetted and marbled presentations are separate pattern descriptions.
- Use registry standards for color terminology, but do not treat a photograph as proof of color registration or pedigree.
- Expect to provide opportunities for activity and engagement, while getting to know the individual cat rather than relying on breed generalizations alone.
- Ask a breeder about the health screening TICA names and how HCM evaluation was handled.
