Botha’s Lark (*Spizocorys fringillaris*) can be brought back from the brink only by protecting the short, high-altitude grasslands it needs and coordinating long-term research and land management across its fragmented South African range. BirdLife South Africa’s 2026 Species Action Plan sets a ten-year aim to stabilise and increase populations and improve the bird’s conservation status.
Why Botha’s Lark is at risk
Botha’s Lark is endemic to South Africa and resident rather than migratory. It depends on short grassland at high elevations, leaving it vulnerable when suitable habitat is converted, degraded or managed in ways that change grass height and structure. Its range is both restricted and fragmented, so losses at individual sites can matter disproportionately.
BirdLife South Africa’s regional assessment lists the species as Critically Endangered in 2025. It gives an estimate of 340 mature individuals, with a range of 200–650, and a decreasing regional trend; the estimate is cited to Colyn et al. 2024a. The same assessment page reports the species as Endangered on the 2024 global Red List. These are assessments with different geographic scopes and dates, not competing labels. BirdLife South Africa’s regional assessment
BirdLife South Africa’s project page says around 20–30 birds are currently known from two populations. That is a count known to the monitoring project, not an alternative estimate of the total mature population. BirdLife South Africa’s project page

What is happening to its grassland habitat?
Habitat loss and degradation are the main documented pressures. Agricultural conversion and pasture management can remove suitable grassland or change its vegetation structure. Burning and grazing practices matter because they influence grass height and cover; even changing from sheep to cattle can alter those conditions. Botha’s Lark also persists in some cattle-only regimes, so no single livestock system can be treated as a proven solution everywhere.
BirdLife South Africa’s 2025 assessment, citing Colyn et al. 2024a, reports an 86% reduction from the previous density estimate and naïve occupancy of 7.5% across 250 walked transects. It also reports that 30% of suitable highland grassland has been lost through direct land-use alteration, while up to 60% of the remaining grassland is unsuitable under associated management regimes. These figures describe different aspects of habitat and population status, not interchangeable measures. BirdLife South Africa’s regional assessment

Climate change and energy developments are also identified as concerns in the action-plan material. The practical management question is how to retain the right grass structure at occupied and potentially suitable sites while reducing pressure on the remaining strongholds. SANBI’s earlier assessment called for research and management plans that address grazing pressure and the timing and frequency of burning; the available sources do not establish one universally best prescription. What is the recovery plan designed to do?
BirdLife South Africa’s 2026 Species Action Plan sets a ten-year goal: “The primary aim of this 10-year Species Action Plan is to stabilise and increase Botha’s Lark populations across the species range, and to improve its conservation status.” BirdLife says it will lead implementation, review progress annually and conduct a full strategy review after five years. - FUNCTIONAL DESIGN: The bird feeder tray is designed to attract the eye of birds and will not turn over when the birds stand on the side of bird feeder for food. And the metal rust-free mesh tray allows the water to easily drain out and keep seeds dry.
- HIGH QUALITY: Made of durable mesh metal, sturdy and lightweight. And black powder coated for weather-resistant, will last for years to use.
- EASY TO USE AND HANG: Easy to hang and simply fill the bird seed into the feeders. And easy to clean, just turn the bird feeder tray face down, wipe it and clean it with cloth or rinse it with water.
- PERFECT FOR YOUR GARDEN: Hanging a bird seed tray in your yard or garden, attract and feed birds, add a beautiful look in your garden, enjoy the scenery of flying birds with your family and friends.
- GIFT IDEA: A unique gift for home and garden lovers or nature lovers. Hanging the bird feeder tray, attract the birds to fly into their garden. The hanging bird feeder tray is a thoughtful and great present for them.
The plan brings together several connected strands of work:
- Research and monitoring: Surveying across the range, monitoring breeding, using nest cameras and ringing birds to learn about distribution, nesting success, movement, survival and threats.
- Landowner and stakeholder engagement: Working with people who manage or own grassland so habitat needs can inform decisions on grazing, burning and land use.
- Education and awareness: Building understanding of the bird’s needs and the value of its grassland habitat.
- Policy and advocacy: Supporting measures that can conserve important sites and address threats.
- Collaboration: Coordinating implementation across the range rather than treating isolated sites as independent fixes.
Monitoring measures answer different questions. Transect surveys help establish where birds are detected and how widely they are distributed; nest monitoring can track breeding outcomes; ringing can contribute evidence about survival and movement. None alone demonstrates that a management intervention has caused population recovery, so long-term comparisons and locally relevant evidence matter.

Why protection and local land management matter
BirdLife South Africa reports that only three of the 20 pentads where Botha’s Lark occurs have any protection status. Work is underway with landowners to ratify the Hoëveld Protected Environment through a biodiversity stewardship agreement; this is a proposed protection effort, not a completed designation. BirdLife South Africa’s regional assessment
Effective recovery therefore depends on both formal protection and practical stewardship of grassland outside protected areas. Land managers can contribute by considering how grazing pressure, livestock type, and the timing and frequency of burning affect grass structure at their sites. The appropriate choices need to be tested against local conditions and the bird’s monitored response rather than assumed to work identically across the range.

BirdLife’s project page reports that 19 nests were monitored in the 2024/2025 season and at least 11 in 2025/2026. These are season-specific monitoring figures, not population totals. They show the kind of breeding information being gathered, while the broader goal is to connect such observations to site management and long-term population trends. BirdLife South Africa’s project page
How birders can avoid disturbing Botha’s Larks
BirdLife South Africa strongly discourages visits to regularly occupied sites and known breeding localities from September through November. If observing the species elsewhere or at another time, respect private property and stay on established routes. These precautions reduce disturbance to birds and avoid adding pressure at sensitive sites. BirdLife South Africa’s project page
How success should be judged
The available plan and assessment point to three practical tests for recovery: whether monitoring shows populations stabilising and increasing; whether suitable grassland is retained or restored through evidence-led local management; and whether strongholds gain effective protection with landowner participation. The sources do not rank particular interventions as proven winners, so progress depends on measuring outcomes and adapting management over the plan’s ten-year horizon.
A 2026 global Red List discussion put forward a recommendation to classify the species as Critically Endangered, but that recommendation was not yet a confirmed final global listing in the available update. It should not be substituted for the currently reported 2024 global category of Endangered. BirdLife South Africa’s regional assessment
