About the Orlov-Rostopchin Sport Horse

The Orlov-Rostopchin, also called the Russian saddle horse, is a Russian saddle and sport horse breed. It began in the 19th century through the fusion of saddle horses bred by Counts Orlov and Rostopchin. The breed became well known in the late 19th century as a dressage and cavalry horse, but its population was severely reduced after the First World War. Semion Boudienny later restored it, and it became known as the Russian Saddle. After the Second World War, it was close to extinction. An unofficial recreation in the 1950s helped produce the Ukrainian Saddle. Russian breeders began officially reviving the breed in 1978, using crosses with Trakehners. Its success in dressage competitions, including at international level, has supported that revival. The Russian saddle horse still has limited recognition.
