About the Zaniskari

The Zaniskari, also called the Zanskari, is a small mountain horse or pony from Ladakh in northern India. The breed takes its name from the Zanskar valley or region in Kargil district. It is a medium-sized horse, often grey, and is adapted to work at high altitude. The Zaniskari resembles the Spiti breed of Himachal Pradesh and shares features with Tibetan breeds across the Himalayas in neighbouring Tibet. Only a few hundred Zaniskari are alive today, so the breed is considered endangered. A conservation programme has been started at Padum, in Zanskar, Kargil district of Ladakh. The Zaniskari is listed as a horse and a pony, with India recorded as its origin and a listed height of 1.2.
