The British Longhair is a sturdy, calm companion cat with a plush coat that needs daily combing to prevent tangles. Many enjoy staying near their people without wanting to be carried or held as a lap cat. Plan for regular coat care, measured meals and play, and ask breeders about health screening.

What is a British Longhair?
The British Longhair is the long-coated counterpart to the British Shorthair. TICA reports that Persian crosses with British cats between 1914 and 1918 introduced the longhair gene. TICA’s championship status took effect in May 2009; GCCF officially recognized the name “British Longhair” on 15 February 2017. These are milestones from different organizations.
Registry terminology and rules may vary. If registration matters to you, ask which registry issued the paperwork and how it records the cat. Appearance alone does not establish breed identity.
Appearance and physical characteristics
TICA characterizes the breed as medium to large, compact, muscular and broad, with a round head, full cheeks, a short nose and a dense, plush coat. Blue, or grey, is familiar, but British Longhairs come in a variety of colors.

British Longhair temperament and behavior
TICA describes British Longhairs as gentle and somewhat reserved at first, then affectionate once familiar. Many prefer to sit beside a person rather than on a lap, dislike being carried and can be content in their own company. They are relatively calm and not especially acrobatic, but each cat has its own temperament.
Early socialization, household routine and individual personality all affect behavior. When meeting a cat, pay attention to its actual responses instead of assuming every British Longhair will be equally outgoing or comfortable with handling.
Grooming: a daily commitment
Plan to comb a British Longhair every day to help prevent tangles. TICA says this coat takes more work than the British Shorthair’s coat, and GCCF likewise advises daily grooming for longhaired cats. A wide-toothed metal cat comb is a practical tool for working through the coat gently.

TICA also recommends a wide-toothed metal comb once a week to help reduce shedding during a seasonal coat change. That seasonal suggestion does not replace the daily combing recommended to prevent tangles. Introduce grooming gradually and keep sessions calm and comfortable for the cat.
- Choose a quiet time when your cat is relaxed.
- Let the cat investigate the comb, then gently comb an easy area for a few seconds.
- Reward calm behavior and stop before the cat becomes distressed.
- Build up gradually to more sensitive areas, checking the coat for tangles as you go.
- Ask a qualified groomer or veterinarian for help if a mat is tight, painful or difficult to handle safely.
Other routine care may include nail trimming, ear cleaning and tooth brushing with pet toothpaste. Follow your veterinarian’s advice and use gentle handling.
Health considerations
Breed-level guidance is not a diagnosis of an individual cat. TICA identifies hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) as a heart-disease concern. GCCF says PKD, or polycystic kidney disease, was once a problem in the British breed and is now controlled through common use of available DNA tests by responsible breeders. These are reasons for careful screening questions and routine veterinary care, not predictions that a particular cat will develop either condition.
PKD and DNA testing
PKD causes cysts in the kidneys that can progressively impair kidney function, according to PDSA. Ask the breeder about the parents’ relevant PKD DNA-test results and request records identifying the tested cats. A general veterinary check is not the same as a specific genetic test.

HCM and cardiac screening
GCCF says no DNA test is yet available for HCM in the British breed. TICA advises screening by echocardiograms performed by a veterinary cardiologist. Ask what cardiac screening the parents have received and whether there is a relevant family history. Screening history is useful information, but it cannot guarantee an individual cat’s lifelong health.
Discuss preventive care and any concerns with your veterinarian. Your cat’s age, health and circumstances should guide its care plan.
Feeding, weight control and exercise
TICA says British Longhairs enjoy food and may gain weight because of a relatively sedentary lifestyle. Monitor portions and encourage regular play rather than relying on free-feeding. Ask your veterinarian to determine an appropriate diet and feeding plan for your cat; do not calculate a fixed amount from breed weight alone.
Teaser toys and fetch are examples of play TICA suggests. Regular interactive play can encourage movement and provide stimulation, but adjust activities to your cat’s abilities and interests.
