The Cable Beach north vehicle ramp is subject to a recurring full vehicle closure from December 1 through February 28, after the Shire of Broome Council approved adding February to the seasonal closure in September 2024. “Permanently” means this is an ongoing annual seasonal measure—not a year-round shutdown. A separate construction closure has also affected access during the Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment.
Why was February added to the annual closure?
The Shire of Broome said the Council supported a Yawuru Park Council recommendation to extend the existing December–January closure through February. In making its decision, the Council considered Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions turtle-breeding data from 2017 to 2023, along with community consultation. The Shire’s stated concern is that vehicles can compact sand or crush nests where flatback turtles generally nest above the high-tide mark. Tyre ruts may obstruct hatchlings trying to reach the water, and vehicle lights can disturb or confuse them. These are the Shire’s reasons for the restriction; the cited material does not quantify the impacts independently.

Shire President Chris Mitchell said: “In recent years, the ramp did not open in February due to the weather impacts on the vehicle ramp and beach.” He added: “That changed this year due to the unusually dry summer, which led to reports of turtle hatchlings caught in tyre ruts.” Both statements appeared in the Shire’s September 19, 2024 release.

What are the seasonal vehicle-access rules?
The Shire’s access guidance sets out three periods for the north ramp. Shire of Broome beach access guidance.

The Shire lists exemptions during the full closure for essential Council services, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and Yawuru Rangers, licensed businesses, emergency vehicles, and other vehicles authorised by the Shire CEO. These exemptions do not amount to general public access.

The Shire’s guidance also gives a beach-driving speed limit of 15 km/h and says penalties of up to $200 may apply for disregarding beach closures. Check current Shire guidance before travelling, since beach conditions and operational access can change.
How much public support did the extension receive?
In its September 19, 2024 release, the Shire reported 925 valid website-survey submissions, with 64% in favour of extending the closure through February. The Shire said the issue had also been raised at the Annual Electors Meeting and through other community engagement. The survey figures are the Shire’s reported results, not an independent poll.

Is the construction closure the same as the turtle-season closure?
No. The seasonal closure is an annual rule for vehicle access at the north ramp. The redevelopment created a separate, time-limited construction restriction. Visitor information described Stage 2 as beginning June 3, 2025, with work expected to finish in mid to late 2026. The available official information did not establish a current completion or reopening date, so do not assume that construction access has resumed or remains closed without checking for a newer notice.
During the construction period, visitor information said there was no vehicle access to Cable Beach north of the rocks. Pedestrian beach access was via the Surf Club, and camel rides could be reached by walking along the beach from that access. Visit Broome also said Gantheaume Point had temporarily expanded the area where vehicles were permitted. Check current notices and local conditions before relying on these arrangements. The project FAQ described a beach buggy service that may be arranged through Cable Beach lifeguards for people unable to use stairs or ramps, when lifeguards are on duty; delays may occur. It also noted a beach-wheelchair loan provided by the Shire and Disability Services Commission. Confirm availability with the relevant service before visiting.

What should visitors check before driving onto Cable Beach?
- Confirm whether your trip falls within the October–February seasonal restrictions and whether the north ramp is open at that time.
- Check for a separate redevelopment or other operational closure; the expected construction finish window is not confirmation of reopening.
- Use another access point only if current local guidance permits vehicle access there. The construction-period information identified Gantheaume Point as an expanded alternative, but that arrangement was temporary.
- Follow posted closures, speed limits and directions from the Shire or beach staff.
