A caged lion and a caged tiger were brought to a PML-N gathering area in Lahore on January 23, 2024, ahead of Pakistan’s February 8 general election. Party leader Marriyum Aurangzeb said Nawaz Sharif had instructed that the animals be sent back. Reports place them at the gathering or welcome camps; they do not establish that the animals appeared on stage or during Sharif’s speech.
What happened in Lahore on January 23, 2024?
Supporters brought one lion and one tiger in cages to a public gathering associated with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in Lahore. The event took place ahead of the country’s February 8 general election. The News International reported on January 23 that Sharif was expected to lead the rally that evening; the Indian Express later published a corroborating account.
Photographs were taken near the caged animals, according to contemporaneous coverage. The reports describe them as being at the gathering or welcome camps—not as appearing alongside Sharif during his speech. The News International’s January 23 report and the Indian Express report provide the event details.
Why were the animals sent back?
The News International and the Indian Express reported that the animals were sent or directed to be sent back after an instruction attributed to Sharif. PML-N leader Marriyum Aurangzeb publicly relayed that instruction. The News International quoted her as saying: “Nawaz Sharif has instructed that no real lion or any other animal should be brought in any rally in Pakistan.” This is Aurangzeb’s account of Sharif’s instruction, not a direct statement quoted from Sharif.

What is known about the animals’ welfare?
The January 2024 reports establish that a caged lion and tiger were brought to the gathering and that they were to be returned. They do not provide veterinary findings or an official welfare or enforcement determination about these particular animals after their return. Their condition should not be inferred from reports about different animals at political events in 2013.
How this differs from the 2013 white-tiger reports
Separate reporting about live big cats at PML-N campaign events dates to 2013. Those reports concerned a white tigress or white tiger, not the lion and tiger at the January 2024 Lahore gathering.

- The Express Tribune reported on May 8, 2013, that a white tigress used in election campaigning reportedly collapsed at a Lahore rally. The article described differing claims about the animal’s condition and the cause, including a WWF suspicion that heat and noise contributed and the owner’s denial of reports that the animal had died.
- Dawn also reported on May 8, 2013, that a white tiger was brought unconscious to a veterinary institution and died, while attributing concerns about heat and noise to WWF.
- The Indian Express/PTI reported on May 18, 2013, that the Lahore High Court sought responses from the party and government departments over alleged campaign use of endangered white tigers. The report describes notices and allegations, not a final court finding.
