Named Megachelicerax cousteaui, the roughly 500-million-year-old animal is a stem-group chelicerate—not a spider—and its claw is the oldest unequivocal chelicera reported in the Nature paper describing it.
Why was the claw in an unexpected place?
While preparing the fossil, Harvard research scientist Rudy Lerosey-Aubril uncovered a claw where an antenna would normally be found on a Cambrian arthropod. He said, “Claws are never in that location in a Cambrian arthropod,” and recalled realizing that he had exposed a chelicera.
A chelicera is the front, pincer-like feeding appendage characteristic of chelicerates. Its position and form helped identify Megachelicerax as a member of that broader arthropod lineage. The discovery matters because earlier proposed Cambrian chelicerate relatives did not preserve unequivocal chelicerae.
How old is the fossil, and where was it found?
The fossil comes from the middle-Cambrian Wheeler Formation in Utah and dates to about 500 million years ago. The Nature paper, published April 1, 2026, describes it as extending the documented history of chelicerates by roughly 20 million years. The press release calls it one of the oldest known chelicerates; the more specific claim is that its chelicera is the oldest unequivocal one reported in the paper.

What does Megachelicerax look like?
A head shield and segmented body
The specimen is slightly more than 8 centimetres long and preserves a dorsal exoskeleton, including a head shield and nine body segments. More than 50 hours of microscope-guided work with a fine needle were spent exposing it.
Limbs and gill-like plates
The fossil preserves six pairs of limbs associated with feeding and sensing: the front chelicerae and five pairs of prosomal limbs. The paper describes those five pairs as pseudobiramous, meaning each limb has two branches. Beneath the body are plate-like, lamella-bearing appendages resembling the book gills of living horseshoe crabs. The resemblance helps illuminate the evolution of chelicerate anatomy; it does not make the Cambrian animal a horseshoe crab.

Is this the oldest spider ancestor ever found?
Not in the sense of a fossil spider or a confirmed direct ancestor. Megachelicerax is described as a stem-group chelicerate: it belongs on the broader evolutionary lineage leading to living chelicerates, but outside the crown group containing their living members and their most recent common ancestor. Spiders are one branch of Chelicerata; horseshoe crabs are another.
The fossil therefore does not prove that spiders existed in the Cambrian, nor does it establish that this particular species gave rise directly to spiders. It shows that key features of the wider chelicerate body plan, including chelicerae, were present by about 500 million years ago.

What does the fossil change about chelicerate evolution?
The authors’ Bayesian and parsimony analyses place Megachelicerax as a stem chelicerate, bridging Cambrian habeliids and post-Cambrian chelicera-bearing synziphosurines in their proposed evolutionary picture. Their interpretation also connects habeliids, mollisoniids and probably megacheirans to the total-group chelicerate tree. These placements are evolutionary hypotheses based on anatomical and phylogenetic analysis, rather than a claim that every named group was a direct ancestor.
Chelicerata includes more than 120,000 living species, and its fossil record spans almost 500 million years. This find supplies unequivocal Cambrian evidence for large predatory members of the group and offers a more informative view of how the chelicerate body plan emerged. Its importance is not that a modern spider has been found in Cambrian rock, but that a distinctive feature shared across the wider lineage is now documented earlier than before.
