Yes. Cats can overheat and develop heatstroke, which can become life-threatening quickly. If your cat has been in a hot environment and is panting heavily, drooling, weak, vomiting, distressed, or collapsing, move them to a cool place, gently wet their coat with cool water, and contact a veterinarian immediately. Do not wait to see whether they recover on their own.
What are the signs of overheating in a cat?
After heat exposure, watch for signs such as:
- Excessive panting
- Drooling or dribbling
- Weakness, lethargy, or distress
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Collapse or loss of consciousness
These signs can have other causes, so they do not confirm heatstroke on their own. But you do not need to see every sign before calling a veterinarian. Heatstroke can worsen rapidly; VCA warns that unconsciousness and death may follow quickly. VCA’s emergency guidance for cats and the Blue Cross cat emergency guide also describe these warning signs.

What should you do if your cat may have heatstroke?
- Move your cat to a cool place. Choose a shaded or air-conditioned area, ideally with airflow.
- Gently wet the coat with cool water. Do not use very cold or freezing water.
- Call a veterinarian immediately. Contact your regular vet or an emergency veterinary hospital and follow their instructions. Do not delay the call to see whether cooling at home is enough.
Cornell Feline Health Center’s heat-safety guidance recommends moving a cat to a cool area, gently wetting the fur with cool water, and contacting a veterinarian immediately. Cooling is a first-aid step, not a replacement for veterinary care.

How can you reduce the risk of overheating?
- Keep fresh water available at all times. Some cats may drink more from running water, but a fountain is optional; fresh water is the priority.
- Provide shade for cats that go outdoors, and, when extreme heat is forecast, keep them indoors in an air-conditioned space if possible.
- Check sheds, garages, greenhouses, barns, and other outbuildings so a cat has not become trapped inside.
- Monitor older, overweight, and flat-faced cats especially closely in hot conditions. Blue Cross recommends extra monitoring for these cats but does not quantify how much their risk differs.
Cornell lists ice cubes and cooling mats as optional ways to offer comfort or a cooler resting spot. A cat should be able to move away from a mat, and any accessory should be used according to its current instructions. Neither a mat nor another cooling product treats heatstroke or replaces a vet call.

The recommendations here draw on cat-specific guidance from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, VCA Animal Hospitals, and Blue Cross. The Blue Cross page lists a review date of 21 June 2023 and a next review date of 22 June 2026; Cornell’s page does not show a publication date, and VCA’s page does not provide one. Cornell advises: “As always, your veterinarian is your best source of guidance if you have any questions or concerns about these recommendations or the well-being of your cat.”
