That makes it a potential pollinator—but researchers have not yet shown that it carries viable pollen to another flower or helps the plant reproduce.
What did researchers observe?
In a short communication published in Food Webs in 2023, researchers described field observations made on 15 December 2020 in coastal Restinga vegetation near Búzios, in Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil. During an approximately four-hour evening session, they observed five Xenohyla truncata frogs feeding on two plant species. These are details from one observation session, not estimates of how often the behavior occurs across the frog population.
One frog entered an open flower of the native milk-fruit tree, Cordia taguahyensis. It stayed for about five minutes, making suction-like movements, then emerged with pollen grains attached to its back. The study also recorded fruit feeding. The paper describes the frog’s diet as unusual among treefrogs and notes its established role in seed dispersal. Read the study in Food Webs.
Does pollen on the frog mean it pollinated the flower?
Not by itself. A flower visitor becomes an effective pollinator only if pollen is carried from one flower and deposited on a receptive flower in a way that can contribute to reproduction. The observation showed pollen on the frog after it fed; the researchers did not establish whether that pollen remained viable, reached another flower, or resulted in fertilization or seed production.

The paper calls X. truncata a “potential pollinator” and describes the observation as first evidence suggesting that a frog may act as one. It does not show that the tree depends on frogs for reproduction or that this frog is a confirmed, effective pollinator. Independent pollination researcher Ruth Cozien, who was not involved in the study, likewise told Scientific American that more research is needed to prove the frogs are pollinators. Read the Scientific American report.
Why does the frog’s other flower visit matter?
The same study reported a frog feeding on a bearded iris, Iris × germanica, and damaging the flower. That contrast is a useful reminder: an animal that visits a flower may be taking food or harming it, rather than pollinating it. In the observed milk-fruit interaction, the frog entered and left carrying pollen; the iris interaction involved flower damage. Neither flower visit alone establishes pollination effectiveness.

What remains to be tested?
Researchers would need to determine whether pollen survives contact with the frog and is deposited on a receptive flower. Evidence that this transfer contributes to plant reproduction would make the case stronger. Possible approaches discussed in coverage of the study include monitoring flowers over time or excluding frogs from some flowers and comparing outcomes. Other open questions include whether frog skin secretions affect pollen and whether frogs visit enough flowers to make a meaningful contribution. These are unanswered questions, not findings from the observation session.
What kind of frog is Xenohyla truncata?
Known as Izecksohn’s Brazilian treefrog, X. truncata is endemic to coastal Restinga habitat in Rio de Janeiro state, within Brazil’s Atlantic Forest region. The study describes it as omnivorous, with a preference for fruit. Its flower-feeding observation took place during the breeding season; the authors suggested nectar might provide energy during energetically demanding activities such as calling, territorial behavior and reproduction. That explanation is a hypothesis, not a measured energy-budget result.

The paper reported the frog as Vulnerable in Brazil and Near Threatened in the IUCN assessment it cited. Those are the categories reported by the 2023 paper and should not be treated as a verification of the species’ current conservation status.

This is an intriguing record of a frog feeding inside a flower and emerging with pollen—not proof that the frog regularly pollinates the milk-fruit tree. For now, “possible pollen carrier” or “potential pollinator” is more accurate than calling it a confirmed pollinator.
