Some archerfish can occur in freshwater, but there is no one freshwater-care rule for the whole genus. The Australian Museum records sevenspot archerfish (Toxotes chatareus) in freshwater and estuarine habitats; banded archerfish (Toxotes jaculatrix) mostly inhabits mangrove and estuarine areas and is only rarely encountered in freshwater. Identify the species before choosing its aquarium conditions.
Natural freshwater occurrence does not establish a safe, long-term captive salinity or a universal care recipe. The sources reviewed here do not settle species-specific aquarium water targets, tank dimensions, or life-stage guidance, so confirm those details with a reliable specialist husbandry source before setting up a tank.
Which archerfish species are freshwater?
The Australian Museum says T. chatareus lives in freshwater and estuarine habitats. For T. jaculatrix, the same museum describes mangrove and estuarine habitats as typical and says it is only rarely encountered in freshwater. The Aquarium of the Pacific also says banded archerfish can exist in fresh or brackish water, while describing coastal brackish mangrove estuaries as typical habitat.
These sources describe habitat, not a complete captive-care prescription. Use the scientific name, reliable identification, and the fish’s source history when seeking husbandry advice; a common name alone is not enough to choose salinity.

| Species | Supported habitat information | Approximate reported maximum | What this means for keepers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sevenspot archerfish (Toxotes chatareus) | Freshwater and estuarine habitats, according to the Australian Museum. | About 40 cm (Australian Museum) | It is a documented freshwater-capable example, but habitat information alone does not specify captive salinity or other care targets. |
| Banded archerfish (Toxotes jaculatrix) | Mostly mangrove and estuarine; rarely encountered in freshwater, according to the Australian Museum. Aquarium of the Pacific says it can exist in fresh or brackish water. | About 30 cm (Australian Museum) | Freshwater occurrence is possible, but do not treat freshwater as a default long-term care recommendation without species-specific captive guidance. |
Can I keep a banded archerfish in freshwater?
The sources confirm that banded archerfish can occur in freshwater, but also describe brackish coastal mangrove and estuarine habitat as typical. That evidence does not establish a universal freshwater setup or prove that every individual or life stage should be kept in freshwater.
Before choosing conditions, confirm the fish’s identity and ask a reliable specialist for captive-care advice specific to the species and its history. Avoid changing salinity by guesswork.

- Specifically Designed Refractometer For Saltwater Aquarium --- The algorithm is made specifically for testing seawater and saltwater. This is different from a standard refractometer which is not calibrated to check salinity of aquarium water and will give an error in your readings.
- Automatic Temperature Calibration --- The calibration process should be carried out with both the room and the instrument at 68° F. The refractive index of a liquid changes with temperature. Due to the automatic temperature calibration, any changes in ambient temperature from 50° F- 86° F will not affect the accuracy of the reading.
- Easy And Clear Reading For Saltwater Aquariums And Reef Tanks --- The refractometer comes with a focus adjustment on the eyepiece, this will give you clarity of the optics and a sharp line for easy reading.
- Comes In A Solid Case Includes Pipette And Calibration Tool --- This refractometer is not only built extremely well, but it comes with a durable hard case for easy storage of the refractometer when not in use. It also includes a calibration tool and a pipette.
- Keep Your Fish And Plant Life In Optimal Well-being --- Pure saltwater is crucial for the vitality of your marine or reef aquarium. Use this refractometer to measure the salinity of the water, the target level of salinity in a reef tank should be 35 ppt.
Do archerfish need brackish water?
Not every archerfish has the same habitat association: T. chatareus is recorded in freshwater and estuarine habitats, while T. jaculatrix is mostly associated with mangrove and estuarine areas. The sources reviewed do not provide authoritative captive salinity targets for each species, so they do not support a single recipe for all archerfish.
If you choose a brackish setup based on species-specific advice, Petco’s general brackish-water care sheet describes brackish water as a freshwater and saltwater mixture and emphasizes stable water quality, temperature, and pH. It recommends checking salinity at least twice weekly. This is general brackish-fish guidance, not an archerfish-specific salinity target or transition schedule.

- MEASURES ON 2 SCALES - Aquarium Refractometer features specific gravity (D20/20) 1.000-1.070 and parts per thousand 0~100‰ , allow to get two results in different units by one test
- WIDELY USE - Salinity Refractometer measures saltwater, salinity of water or seawater, ideal for aquariums, marine monitoring, fish-keeping, and saltwater pools
- ATC FUNCTION - Saltwater refractometer with automatic temperature compensation (ATC) function, allow you to obtain the accurate result faster and easier
- EASY TO USE - Put 2-3 drops of sample on the refracotmter’s prism, towards light, read the accurate readings through the optics eyepiece directly
- DURABLE MATERIAL: The optic salinity tester is made of aluminum and ABS rubber, anti-rust, non-staining and resistant abrasion. Portable Refractometer comes with plastic case, mini screwdriver,a dropper and a cleaning cloth
What should you check before choosing aquarium conditions?
- Confirm the scientific name. Ask for the full Toxotes species name rather than relying on a common-name label.
- Check reliable species information. Use a museum or other dependable source to verify identity and natural habitat.
- Get captive-care guidance. Natural occurrence in freshwater or brackish habitat does not by itself determine the right aquarium conditions for an individual fish.
- Plan for adult size. The Australian Museum reports approximate maxima of 30 cm for T. jaculatrix and 40 cm for T. chatareus.
- Monitor conditions rather than guessing. If maintaining brackish water, follow specialist advice and measure salinity; Petco’s general guidance recommends checking it at least twice weekly.
What do archerfish eat?
Archerfish hunt around the water surface and shoot jets of water at prey. San Diego Zoo and Los Angeles Zoo profiles list prey including insects, spiders, crustaceans, and small fish. A feeding plan should account for surface hunting and be based on the identified species and reliable captive-care advice.
How large do archerfish get?
Adult size differs between species. The Australian Museum reports approximate maximum lengths of 30 cm for T. jaculatrix and 40 cm for T. chatareus. Plan around the identified species’ adult size rather than a juvenile’s current appearance.

These size figures do not establish an exact minimum tank volume. The sources reviewed do not provide tank dimensions or a species-specific aquarium volume, so consult a specialist husbandry source before acquiring an archerfish.

The reviewed sources establish useful habitat distinctions, feeding behavior, and approximate adult sizes, but they do not establish species-by-species captive salinity targets, juvenile-to-adult transition guidance, tank dimensions, or numeric water-chemistry and temperature ranges. Do not substitute a generic recipe for verified advice about the identified fish.
