Which bottom feeders may live with a betta?

How much space and what conditions do they need?
There is no universal tank-size minimum for every bottom-dwelling species or stocking combination. Aquarium Co-Op gives general guidance of 10–20 gallons for bettas with tank mates; Aqueon recommends 15 gallons or larger for a peaceful community aquarium. Aqueon and PetMD give 76–81°F as the betta temperature target. Aqueon does not state a publication year on its setup guide; PetMD’s care sheet is dated 2026. How do you make sure the bottom dweller gets fed?
Do not rely on leftovers or algae to feed a bottom-dwelling fish. Aquarium Co-Op recommends intentionally feeding Corydoras and kuhli loaches sinking foods. A bottom feeder is not a substitute for filtration, water testing, or aquarium maintenance. PetMD recommends monitoring water quality and maintaining the aquarium. PetMD
How should you introduce a bottom feeder to a betta?
- Check the fit first. Confirm the aquarium has room for the companion’s adult size and required group, and that its water conditions overlap with the betta’s.
- Prepare the environment. Add suitable cover and hiding places, maintain stable temperature, and use gentle or adjustable low-flow filtration.
- Plan feeding. Have appropriate sinking food ready and a way to check that it reaches the bottom dwellers.
- Observe behavior and feeding after introduction. Watch whether the betta chases or attacks, whether there is fin damage, whether a companion hides persistently, and whether it can eat.
- Separate incompatible fish. If aggression, injury, persistent hiding, or inability to feed occurs, separate the fish and reassess the arrangement. Betta temperament varies, and Fluval notes that incompatible fish may need to be removed. Fluval; PetMD
Will a bottom feeder clean the betta tank?
