Yes, a healthy cat can try a small amount of clean alfalfa grass, but alfalfa sprouts are optional—not a necessary food or a proven health treatment. VCA lists alfalfa among varieties of “cat grass,” while noting that cats do not need grass. Its guidance concerns cat grass generally, not a tested serving size or specific recommendation for alfalfa sprouts. Keep any grass treat modest, and ask your veterinarian before offering it to a cat with health or digestive problems.

What veterinary guidance says about alfalfa

VCA describes “cat grass” as grasses that produce cereal grains, including oat, wheat, barley, alfalfa, and rye. It suggests trying a variety or two and watching which one the cat prefers. That makes alfalfa one possible cat-grass choice; it does not establish that alfalfa sprouts have special nutritional benefits or treat a health problem. VCA’s cat-grass guidance is general rather than an alfalfa-sprout feeding trial.

Cats may graze for roughage or entertainment, but grass is not a dietary requirement. Do not rely on alfalfa to detoxify a cat, prevent disease, cure hairballs, or meet nutritional needs. Cats are obligate carnivores and need nutrients found in animal tissue; sprouts should never replace a nutritionally complete cat food. VCA’s feline nutrition guidance explains cats’ nutritional requirements.

How much can a cat eat?

No alfalfa-specific safe serving size or number of sprouts is established in the available veterinary guidance. VCA’s general rule is that treats of any kind, including grass, should make up no more than 10% of a cat’s total daily calories. This is general treat and grass guidance—not a recommended alfalfa dose. VCA Animal Hospitals, updated November 7, 2025.

Offer only a small nibble rather than a bowlful. Cats do not have the digestive enzymes to process large quantities of grass, and overeating can lead to excess vomiting. VCA also cautions that insoluble fiber could build up and contribute to an intestinal blockage if the cat does not vomit.

If your cat develops repeated vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite, lethargy, or another concerning symptom after eating sprouts, contact a veterinarian. The timing alone does not establish the cause, and symptoms should not be diagnosed from the food exposure alone.

How to grow cat grass indoors more safely

An indoor planter lets you control the growing medium and avoid some of the uncertainties associated with outdoor grass. VCA recommends a shallow container with drainage, ordinary potting soil, and grass seeds. Its general cat-grass growing timeline is 3–7 days for new sprouts to appear and 10–14 days for grass to be ready, or when it is roughly 4 inches (10 cm) tall. A crop may last up to three weeks. These are cat-grass growing estimates, not alfalfa-specific guarantees. VCA Animal Hospitals, updated November 7, 2025.

  1. Use a shallow container with drainage, ordinary potting soil, and cat-grass seeds.
  2. Keep new seeds damp while they sprout, then water sparingly. Excess water can encourage mold.
  3. Inspect the planter and remove it if the growth looks sickly or moldy.
  4. Keep the planter separate from other greenery your cat might chew.

Indoor-grown grass versus outdoor grass

Outdoor grass may have pesticide exposure, and outdoor soil may contain persistent intestinal parasite eggs. Growing grass indoors can reduce those particular exposures, but it does not make the crop automatically safe: clean soil, careful watering, and mold-free growth still matter. Cats may not distinguish safe greenery from toxic plants, so keep hazardous plants out of reach.

The ASPCA’s toxic and non-toxic plant list can help identify other plants in the home. It does not, by itself, establish whether alfalfa sprouts are safe or toxic to cats.

Choosing a grass variety

VCA lists oat, wheat, barley, alfalfa, and rye as possible cat-grass varieties. There is no established health advantage for alfalfa over the others in the guidance cited here. Choose based on practical considerations:

When to ask your veterinarian

Check with your cat’s veterinarian before adding grass if your cat has a medical condition or a history of digestive trouble. A veterinarian can advise whether grazing is appropriate for that individual cat. There is no alfalfa-specific portion recommendation in the cited guidance, so avoid guessing at a dose—especially for a cat with existing health concerns.
