It’s best not to give cats human biscuits as a regular treat. They are not made to meet cats’ nutritional needs, and recipes vary. The available veterinary guidance does not establish that a tiny taste of a plain baked biscuit is automatically toxic, but ingredients such as chocolate, raisins, onion, or xylitol can make a biscuit dangerous. If your cat ate one of these ingredients, contact a veterinarian promptly.

Why biscuits are not a good cat treat

Cats are obligate carnivores and need a complete, balanced feline diet. A human biscuit is not formulated to provide that nutrition, and treats should not replace food that meets a cat’s dietary needs. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine advises that treats are generally not nutritionally complete and balanced, so they should be offered only occasionally: Feeding Your Cat.

Whether a particular biscuit poses a toxicity concern depends on its ingredients. The available veterinary sources do not set a biscuit-specific safe dose, so it would be misleading to call every plain baked biscuit poisonous—or to promise that any small taste is harmless.

Ingredients that make a biscuit concerning

Check the package or recipe, including flavorings and powders. Cornell lists chocolate, raisins, onion, and xylitol-containing gum among human-food hazards for cats; its small-animal toxin guidance also identifies chocolate and onion as potentially toxic.

  • Chocolate: Treat a chocolate-containing biscuit as a potential poisoning concern.
  • Raisins: A biscuit containing raisins warrants prompt veterinary advice.
  • Onion: Check for onion in any form, including onion powder.
  • Xylitol: If the product contains xylitol, contact a veterinarian promptly.

See Cornell’s Poisons and Small Animal Toxins guidance. The latter notes that its list is not exhaustive, so do not assume an unlisted ingredient is safe.

What to do if your cat ate a biscuit

  1. Check the ingredients. Keep the package or recipe, and look for chocolate, raisins, onion or onion powder, and xylitol.
  2. Estimate what and when. Note how much your cat may have eaten and when it happened.
  3. Contact a veterinarian promptly if a potentially harmful ingredient was present or your cat seems unwell. Share the ingredient list, estimated amount, and timing. Cats Protection also advises contacting a vet about concerns involving human foods: Cats and Human Foods.
  4. Do not try home treatment or induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to.

The cited guidance does not provide a universal biscuit dose threshold or observation window. A veterinarian can advise based on the recipe, amount, timing, symptoms, and your cat’s health.

How to offer treats more safely

Choose a cat-formulated treat, or use a small portion of your cat’s usual food allowance as a reward. Count all treats toward the daily total. Cornell gives a rule of thumb of 10–15% of daily calories; VCA recommends the more conservative ceiling of 10%: Cat Treats. Using 10% as the maximum is a practical way to stay within both recommendations.

For training, keep rewards small and account for them in the cat’s overall food intake. VCA discusses using food and treats for this purpose in Using Food and Treats for Training Cats. If your cat has a medical condition or eats a prescription diet, ask the veterinary team which treats are appropriate; a general calorie limit does not determine whether a particular treat fits that diet.

Do not confuse baked biscuits with raw yeast dough

Unbaked yeast dough is a separate and more urgent hazard. VCA’s Pet Poison Helpline-authored guidance explains that dough can expand in a cat’s stomach and produce ethanol. If your cat ate raw yeast dough, contact a veterinarian immediately: Bread Dough Poisoning in Cats.
