Can Cats Eat Cactus? How to Tell Which Plants Pose a Risk

Cactus is not one toxicity category: ASPCA lists some types as non-toxic to cats and pencil cactus as toxic. Identify the plant and get veterinary advice after suspected ingestion.

Some plants sold as cactus are listed as non-toxic to cats, but pencil cactus is listed as toxic. Because the common name “cactus” covers different plants, identify the plant by its scientific name when possible; if your cat ate an unidentified or potentially toxic plant, contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control for case-specific advice.

Is cactus poisonous to cats?

There is no single answer for every plant called cactus. The ASPCA lists tree cactus (Opuntia species) and Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera bridgesii) as non-toxic to cats, but lists pencil cactus (Euphorbia tirucalli) as toxic. These listings are examples, not a complete guide to every plant that may be sold or described as a cactus.

“Non-toxic” is not the same as suitable food. The ASPCA cautions that eating any plant material may cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset in cats and dogs. Its plant list is also not all-inclusive, and a plant may look different from the database photos. Check the plant’s identity rather than applying one entry to a different-looking or unidentified plant. ASPCA toxic and non-toxic plants guidance.

What the ASPCA lists for these cactus plants

Common name Scientific name ASPCA listing for cats Reported detail
Pencil cactus; sticks of fire Euphorbia tirucalli Toxic Irritant sap (latex) can irritate the mouth and stomach and sometimes cause vomiting. The ASPCA says its toxicity is generally overrated. ASPCA pencil cactus entry.
Tree cactus Opuntia species Non-toxic The ASPCA plant entry lists it as non-toxic to cats. ASPCA tree cactus entry.
Christmas cactus; Easter cactus Schlumbergera bridgesii Non-toxic The ASPCA plant entry lists it as non-toxic to cats. ASPCA Christmas cactus entry.

Why pencil cactus is a special concern

Pencil cactus is the toxic plant among these examples. The ASPCA identifies its irritant latex sap as the toxic principle and reports mouth and stomach irritation, sometimes with vomiting. Its entry also describes the toxicity as “generally over-rated.” That qualification is not a guarantee that an individual exposure is harmless, so suspected ingestion still warrants professional advice. What to do if your cat chewed or ate a cactus

  1. Identify the plant if you can. Check its label or scientific name. Do not rely only on a generic name or visual resemblance; ASPCA notes that plants can differ in appearance from its photos.
  2. Call for individualized advice if ingestion is suspected. Contact your local veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control if your cat may have eaten a potentially poisonous plant. ASPCA lists (888) 426-4435 on its pencil-cactus entry and notes that a consultation fee may apply.
  3. Follow the professional’s guidance. A plant-list entry is not a treatment plan. The cited ASPCA materials do not provide a complete treatment protocol or a universal symptom checklist for cactus exposure.
