Can Cats Eat Cheese? Choosing Cheese-Flavored Cat Treats Safely

Cheese is not necessary for cats, and dairy can cause digestive problems in many. Learn how to choose a cheese-flavored cat treat and offer it cautiously.

Some cats may tolerate a tiny piece of plain cheese, but cheese is not a necessary snack and dairy can upset many cats’ stomachs. If you want to offer a cheese-style treat, choose a cat treat with clear calorie and ingredient information, offer a small amount, and keep all treats within about 10% of your cat’s daily calories.

Can cats eat cheese?

It depends on the cat. VCA lists cheese among foods that may be safe and enjoyed by cats, while Cornell warns that many cats are lactose-intolerant and can develop gastrointestinal problems after eating dairy. A cat that tolerates a small taste is not proof that cheese is a suitable snack for every cat.

Cats do not need cheese or milk. Cornell says milk is not generally recommended as a treat, and VCA notes that cats do not need milk. Cheese should be an occasional extra, not a substitute for complete cat food.

  • Check calories per serving. Compare the calories in the amount you would actually give, not just the package’s suggested serving. VCA recommends low-calorie treats and notes that sprayable cheese products can be high in calories.
  • Read the ingredient list. Check what the product contains and avoid assuming that a cheese flavor tells you whether the treat suits your cat. VCA notes that cheese powder is used as a palatant in pet foods; that fact does not establish that a particular cheese-flavored treat is superior or appropriate for your cat.
  • Look for a portion you can control. A small, easy-to-measure serving makes it simpler to limit calories and stop if your cat reacts poorly.
  • Consider your cat’s diet and health. Ask your veterinary care team before adding treats if your cat has a medical condition or follows a special or prescription diet; extra foods can interfere with some prescribed diets.

How much cheese or cheese-flavored treat is appropriate?

Use 10% of daily calories as a conservative ceiling for all treats combined, not as a target to fill with cheese snacks. Cornell gives a general allowance of 10–15% of daily calories for treats; VCA recommends 10%. Your veterinarian can advise on an individual calorie budget, especially if your cat has a medical or dietary concern.

If you offer plain cheese, keep it to a tiny taste rather than a regular portion. For a new commercial treat, begin with a small piece and introduce it by itself, rather than adding several unfamiliar foods at once. VCA recommends this gradual approach, particularly for cats prone to stomach upset.

What signs should you watch for?

After dairy, possible signs of lactose intolerance include diarrhea, vomiting, bloating, and abdominal discomfort, according to VCA. A reaction after a snack does not by itself diagnose lactose intolerance or identify the cause. Stop offering the food and contact your veterinarian for advice, particularly if signs are severe, persist, or recur.

When should you skip the snack?

  • Your cat is on a prescription diet or has a condition for which the veterinary team has restricted extra foods.
  • Your cat has had digestive signs after dairy or a similar treat.
  • You cannot determine the serving calories or ingredients well enough to fit the treat into your cat’s diet.

In those situations, ask your veterinarian for an appropriate alternative instead of testing a cheese snack at home.
