Yes—cats can nibble plain cilantro, and the ASPCA lists cilantro as non-toxic to cats. That classification does not guarantee every cat will tolerate it or make cilantro a useful part of a cat’s diet. A small taste of the plain plant is different from salsa or another prepared dish, which may contain unsafe ingredients such as onion.
Is cilantro toxic to cats?
The ASPCA classifies cilantro as non-toxic to cats. Its listing identifies the plant as Coriandrum sativum and also gives the common names coriander, Chinese parsley, and dhania. This is a toxicity classification—not a recommendation to feed cilantro, a proven serving size, or a promise that it cannot upset an individual cat’s stomach. See the ASPCA’s cilantro listing.

PetMD also includes cilantro among plants considered safe for cats, while cautioning that non-toxic plant material can still cause gastrointestinal upset and that eating a large amount of plant matter can create a blockage risk. PetMD’s overview of plants and flowers for cats.

No. Cats do not need cilantro, and it should not replace complete cat food or be treated as a supplement with established health benefits. No evidence-based serving size or feeding schedule is established here, so avoid relying on a specific number of leaves or a routine amount as veterinary guidance. If your cat eats a little plain cilantro and remains well, its non-toxic classification is reassuring; you do not need to offer it deliberately. Ask your veterinarian before introducing extras if your cat eats a prescription or therapeutic diet.

Are cilantro leaves and stems safe?
The ASPCA’s non-toxic listing identifies the plant as cilantro (Coriandrum sativum); it does not provide separate feeding guidance for leaves and stems. Treat either as plant material your cat does not need, and do not assume that a larger quantity is harmless. A large amount of plant matter may upset the digestive system or contribute to blockage risk.
Plain cilantro is not the same as a cilantro-containing dish
Check every ingredient if your cat ate salsa, sauce, rice, or another prepared food. Cilantro’s classification does not apply to the whole dish. If it was a small amount of plain cilantro
If your cat ate only a little plain cilantro and is acting normally, observe for digestive upset. The ASPCA lists the plant as non-toxic, but individual cats may not tolerate unusual plant material.

If your cat ate a lot, seems unwell, or ate a mixed dish
Find out what and how much your cat ate, including all ingredients in any prepared food, and contact your veterinarian for case-specific advice. Seek veterinary guidance for repeated vomiting or diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy, or other marked changes. These signs are not established as effects of cilantro specifically; Cornell lists them among signs associated with poisoning generally, along with seizures and difficulty breathing.
If you suspect your cat ate a toxic ingredient, contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic promptly. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you to do so.

No. Cilantro is Coriandrum sativum; parsley is Petroselinum crispum. The ASPCA lists cilantro as non-toxic to cats and parsley as toxic, so identify the plant rather than relying on a loose common name.
