The ASPCA’s cat plant list does not identify kale as toxic. The list is not all-inclusive, and a plant’s absence from its toxic entries is not proof that it is beneficial or safe in any amount.

A kale-specific article published by Webvet on June 26, 2026, and medically reviewed by Dr. Athena Gaffud, DVM, describes a small amount of plain kale as unlikely to poison a cat. It also says an evidence-based serving size has not been established. Treat that as limited, secondary guidance rather than a universal safety guarantee. Even non-toxic plant material can cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset in cats, according to the ASPCA.

No. Cats require a complete, balanced diet suited to their needs, including animal protein. VCA explains that cats are obligate carnivores: they can eat some grains and vegetables, but they must receive animal protein. There is no established kale serving size or frequency to recommend. If your cat follows a veterinary-prescribed diet, ask the veterinarian before adding foods. For anyone considering homemade meals, VCA notes that they require careful ingredient selection and strict adherence to a nutritionally formulated recipe; substitutions can disrupt nutrient balance. What if my cat ate kale?
A small amount of plain kale
If your cat ate a small amount of plain kale and seems well, the available kale-specific guidance suggests that poisoning is unlikely. Monitor for signs of stomach upset, such as vomiting, and contact your veterinarian if your cat becomes ill. No source establishes a dose threshold that can predict an individual cat’s response.

Seasoned or mixed dishes
Kale in a salad, chip, soup, smoothie, or other prepared food is not the same exposure as plain kale. Other ingredients may change the risk, so do not assume a dish is safe based on the kale alone. If it contained a potentially poisonous ingredient, or your cat seems unwell, contact a veterinarian or animal poison control promptly.

When you call, be ready to describe the preparation and ingredients, the estimated amount eaten, and when it happened. The ASPCA advises contacting a veterinarian or its poison-control service when an animal may have ingested a poisonous substance; its general guidance is available at ASPCA Animal Poison Control.

Can cats eat cooked kale or kale chips?
The available kale-specific guidance concerns plain kale; it does not establish the safety of every cooking method or prepared product. Cooking does not make additional ingredients irrelevant. Kale chips and dishes may include seasonings or other ingredients that need to be assessed separately. If you cannot confirm what was in the food, contact your veterinarian or animal poison control for advice.
