No—mac and cheese is not a suitable treat for cats. Its dairy may upset a lactose-intolerant cat’s stomach, and recipes or packaged mixes can include onion, garlic, chives, or leeks, which are poisonous to cats. If your cat has eaten some, check the ingredients and contact a veterinarian promptly if any of those seasonings may be present.

Why mac and cheese is different from plain pasta or cheese

VCA Animal Hospitals lists plain, unseasoned cheese and pasta noodles among foods that may be offered as cat treats. That does not make prepared mac and cheese appropriate: the finished dish combines ingredients and may include seasonings that change the risk. [VCA Animal Hospitals: Using Food and Treats for Training Cats]

There is no established mac-and-cheese serving size that is safe for every cat. The ingredients and recipe vary, and an individual cat’s response to dairy can vary too.

What can make mac and cheese risky for cats?

Dairy may cause digestive upset

Some cats are lactose-intolerant. After consuming cow’s or goat’s milk, signs can include diarrhea, vomiting, bloating, and abdominal discomfort, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. The reviewed guidance does not establish the lactose content of every cheese or a reliably safe portion of this dish. [VCA Animal Hospitals: Food Intolerance in Cats]

Onion-family seasonings are poisonous

Check for onion, garlic, chives, and leeks, all members of the Allium genus. They are poisonous to cats in every form, including cooked, dried, powdered, and liquid preparations. Garlic is especially toxic among these common kitchen ingredients, and concentrated powders can be a particular concern. Seasoning may be included in a packaged mix or recipe even when it is not obvious from the dish’s appearance. [VCA Animal Hospitals: Onion, Garlic, Chive, and Leek Poisoning in Cats]

Possible signs include mouth irritation, drooling, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Larger exposures can damage red blood cells; warning signs may include weakness, rapid heart or breathing rate, pale gums, and red-colored urine. A veterinarian or poison-control professional should assess a possible exposure rather than relying on symptoms to judge its seriousness. My cat ate mac and cheese: what should I do?

  1. Check the ingredients. Look at the package, recipe, or seasoning mix for onion, garlic, chives, or leeks. Remember that dried and powdered forms count.
  2. Note the exposure details. Estimate how much your cat ate and when. Keep the package or ingredient list available.
  3. Call a veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline promptly if an Allium ingredient may have been present. Share the ingredient information, estimated amount, timing, and any signs you have noticed. Do not wait for symptoms to develop before seeking professional advice about a possible exposure.
  4. Do not induce vomiting at home. Follow instructions from a veterinary professional or poison-control service. [VCA Animal Hospitals: Onion, Garlic, Chive, and Leek Poisoning in Cats]

If the dish contained no Allium ingredients, dairy can still cause digestive upset in a lactose-intolerant cat. Contact your veterinarian if your cat develops concerning signs or if you are uncertain what was in the dish.

Does the 10% treat-calorie guideline make a bite okay?

No. VCA says treats should account for no more than 10% of a cat’s daily calories. That is a general treat-calorie limit, not a safe-serving recommendation for mac and cheese and not a reason to offer a dish that may contain harmful seasonings. [VCA Animal Hospitals: Using Food and Treats for Training Cats]

How established are the risks?

Pet Poison Helpline’s top ten cat toxins in 2023 included onions, chives, leeks, shallots, and garlic, as reported by VCA Animal Hospitals. That list concerns cat toxins generally; it is not a statistic about mac and cheese. The reviewed sources do not provide a mac-and-cheese-specific safe dose, prevalence figure, or clinical study statistic. [VCA Animal Hospitals: Household Hazards – Toxic Hazards for Cats]

Renee Schmid, DVM, DABT, DABVT, writing for Pet Poison Helpline in VCA’s Allium-poisoning article, advises: “Never give food seasoned with onions or garlic to your cat.” [VCA Animal Hospitals: Onion, Garlic, Chive, and Leek Poisoning in Cats]
