No—pecan pie is not a suitable food for cats. Pecans are high in oils and fats, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in pets and may contribute to pancreatitis. Pie recipes can also contain other concerning ingredients. If your cat has eaten some, check the recipe and amount, then contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service if you are unsure or concerned.

Why pecan pie is a poor choice for cats

The clearest concern is the fat in pecans. The ASPCA says nuts, including pecans, are high in oils and fats; in pets, these can cause vomiting and diarrhea and may lead to pancreatitis in some animals. That is general pet guidance, not a way to predict what will happen to an individual cat.

Pecan pie also offers cats no nutritional benefit that justifies feeding it. Its rich filling and crust are human dessert foods, not a cat treat. The available guidance does not establish a safe amount of pecan pie for cats, so do not treat a small bite as a reliably safe serving.

Check the recipe for other hazards

Pecan pie recipes differ. Check the package or recipe rather than assuming every pie contains the same ingredients. The ASPCA’s guidance identifies several ingredients that may matter in baked goods:

  • Convenient Stay-Fresh Pouches: Resealable pouches makes for easy treating and keep your cat’s paws off when you’re not watching
  • Alcohol: Some recipes use bourbon or alcohol-containing flavoring. Foods containing alcohol can cause serious signs, including vomiting, diarrhea, incoordination, breathing difficulty, tremors, coma, or death. The amount remaining in a particular baked pie is not established, so contact a veterinarian promptly if alcohol may be involved. See the ASPCA guidance on alcohol.
  • Chocolate or cocoa: These are not standard ingredients in every pecan pie, but some recipes or toppings may include them. Chocolate, coffee, and caffeine can cause gastrointestinal, neurologic, and cardiac signs in pets; darker and baking chocolate contain higher concentrations of the compounds of concern. Review the ASPCA’s chocolate and caffeine information.
  • Xylitol: Check labels on sugar-free products or ingredients. The ASPCA warns that xylitol can cause low blood sugar and may damage the liver, depending on the amount. It should not be assumed to be present in ordinary pecan pie.
  • Excess salt: Check the ingredient list if the pie is a prepared product or contains unusual additions. The ASPCA describes toxicity signs from excessive salt; this is a label check, not a claim that pecan pie normally contains a toxic amount.

What to do if your cat ate pecan pie

  1. Prevent another bite. Move the pie and any crumbs out of reach.
  2. Estimate the exposure. Note when it happened and approximately how much your cat ate. Keep the packaging or recipe so you can read the ingredients to a veterinary professional.
  3. Call for case-specific advice when needed. Contact your veterinarian or a veterinary poison-control service if the amount is unknown or more than a taste, the recipe includes a concerning ingredient, or your cat develops signs of illness. Cornell University’s small-animal toxin guidance also advises contacting a veterinarian or animal poison-control center when uncertain.
  4. Do not try to make your cat vomit. Pet Poison Helpline advises cat owners never to induce vomiting at home; hydrogen peroxide can cause serious, potentially fatal gastrointestinal injury. Call a veterinarian or poison-control service for instructions instead. See Pet Poison Helpline’s guidance on pie exposures.

The ASPCA Poison Control service lists (888) 426-4435 and says it is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; a consultation fee may apply. Confirm the current service details on its page when calling.

When to treat the exposure as urgent

Do not wait for symptoms if the recipe may contain alcohol or another concerning ingredient: seek prompt veterinary advice. If your cat is already showing signs of illness, contact a veterinarian or emergency veterinary clinic. For a symptom-free cat that only had a trace amount of a known recipe, a veterinary professional can help assess the specific situation; the available sources do not provide a dose threshold that makes an exposure definitively safe.
