No—don’t feed pistachios to cats. The ASPCA says pistachios are not generally toxic to animals, but that does not make them a suitable treat: large amounts may upset a cat’s stomach or possibly contribute to pancreatitis, and swallowed shells may cause an intestinal obstruction. There is no established cat-specific safe serving or toxic dose.
Why pistachios are not a good cat treat
The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center says pistachios are “not really toxic to animals,” while cautioning that a large amount may cause stomach upset and possibly pancreatitis. That is general animal guidance, not a cat-specific dose study; it does not establish how many pistachios a cat could safely eat.

Pet Poison Helpline also groups pistachios with other nuts and notes that their high fat content can cause digestive upset and pancreatitis in pets. Neither source quantifies the risk for cats or identifies a safe portion. The reviewed sources do not show a nutritional benefit that would justify offering pistachios.

A pistachio shell may cause an intestinal obstruction if swallowed, according to the ASPCA. Removing the shell does not turn the nut into a recommended cat food; the concerns about large amounts and high-fat nuts remain.

Salted or seasoned pistachios
The ASPCA warns that excessive salt intake can be harmful to pets, but the reviewed sources do not give salt amounts for pistachios or establish the risk from a particular seasoned nut. A salted pistachio exposure is not automatically salt poisoning. Tell a veterinarian whether the pistachios were salted or seasoned so they can assess the actual exposure.
My cat ate a pistachio: what should I do?
- Work out what was eaten. Note the approximate amount, whether any shells were swallowed, and whether the nuts had salt or other seasoning.
- Contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service for advice. The ASPCA recommends contacting a veterinarian or its Animal Poison Control Center when a pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance. The right advice depends on the individual cat and exposure.
- Seek veterinary advice promptly if symptoms appear. The available sources do not establish a pistachio-specific symptom threshold or timeline. Do not wait for a particular symptom or amount before calling if you are concerned.
Do not try to induce vomiting or give home treatment unless a veterinarian instructs you to. The ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center and people-food safety guidance provide general advice, but neither gives a cat-specific pistachio dose or treatment protocol.
