No—don’t feed raisins to cats. If your cat may have eaten one, contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service promptly. Tell them how much your cat may have eaten and when. The available guidance supports caution, but it does not establish a safe amount for cats or prove that raisins cause kidney injury in cats.

Why raisins are a concern—and what is known about cats

Veterinary toxicology references describe grape and raisin poisoning chiefly in dogs, where kidney injury is a concern. The ASPCA’s people-food guidance and ASPCApro’s professional material discuss kidney risks and related signs in dogs. Pet Poison Helpline’s raisin-specific reference likewise says poisoning is primarily reported in dogs.

The evidence for cats is less settled. Pet Poison Helpline’s broader advice says an ingestion of one or two raisins or grapes should be treated as potentially toxic to a dog or cat. That is a precautionary triage recommendation, not the result of a feline dose study. The available sources do not establish a feline safe dose or prove that raisins cause kidney injury in cats. Tartaric acid is a suspected, not proven, toxic component.

What to do if your cat ate a raisin

  1. Call your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service promptly. Do not wait for symptoms before asking for advice.
  2. Share the details. Report the estimated number of raisins and when the possible ingestion occurred. If you are unsure, say so rather than guessing.
  3. Follow professional instructions. Do not induce vomiting or give medication unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional tells you to.

The ASPCA lists its Poison Control number as (888) 426-4435 and states that the service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; a consultation fee may apply. Confirm the number and service availability before relying on them, as contact details can change.

BugMD Flea and Tick Spray for Dogs - Kills & Repels on Contact
  • KILLS & REPELS ON CONTACT: Knock down an active flea and tick problem fast — this plant-powered spray kills fleas and ticks on contact and keeps repelling them on dogs, so you’re not waiting days for a pill or drop to take effect.
  • PLANT-POWERED ESSENTIAL OILS: A working blend of cedarwood, rosemary, geranium, lemongrass, and thyme oils — a plant-powered alternative to harsh chemical collars, pills, and drops when used as directed.
  • SAFE FOR PETS & FAMILY WHEN USED AS DIRECTED: Formulated without permethrin, and gentle enough for dogs, puppies, and senior dogs when diluted and used as directed. Always read the full label and spot-test a small area before full-body application.
  • TREAT THE WHOLE HOME, NOT JUST YOUR PET: Fleas live in your carpets, not only on your animal — spray it on carpets, rugs, pet beds, furniture, floors, baseboards, and kennels to treat the environment, indoors and out, when used as directed.
  • COMPLETE KIT, MAKES 32 OZ: Includes one 16 oz refillable spray bottle and two 3.7 oz concentrate bottles — just add water to make 32 oz of plant-powered flea and tick spray for dogs and home. Refill instead of rebuying, so a little goes a long way.

What symptoms should you watch for?

Grape and raisin toxicity references describe vomiting and other gastrointestinal signs, lethargy, appetite loss, increased thirst or urination, and kidney injury. Detailed descriptions are largely dog-focused, so these signs should not be taken as a proven symptom sequence in cats. If your cat seems unwell after a possible ingestion, contact a veterinarian immediately; do not use the presence or absence of symptoms to decide whether to seek advice.

How many raisins are dangerous to a cat?

No feline toxic-dose threshold is established in the available guidance. Jen Steckline, CVT, a Veterinary Information Specialist at Pet Poison Helpline, advises treating “an ingestion of 1-2 raisins or grapes” as potentially toxic to a dog or cat. This is a cautious recommendation, not a validated amount at which cats become poisoned. Because the sources do not identify a safe amount for cats, do not intentionally offer even a small quantity.

Should raisins be used as a cat treat?

No. Raisins are not an appropriate treat for cats. Choose a treat made for cats instead, and keep raisins and foods containing them out of your cat’s reach.
