It should not replace a complete-and-balanced cat food, and treats should stay within 10% of your cat’s daily calories. Avoid raw seafood, bones, seasonings, and routine human tuna snacks; ask your veterinarian before offering treats to a cat with a medical condition or prescription diet.
Which seafood is safe for cats?
Veterinary guidance supports cooked seafood as an occasional cat treat when it is unseasoned and preferably low in calories. That is not a blanket approval for every seafood species, recipe, or serving size: the available guidance does not establish a species-by-species safety list or a universal seafood portion.

If you share seafood, offer only a small, plain, cooked, boneless bite. Skip raw fish and raw seafood, which can carry pathogens, and remove bones; both raw and cooked bones can cause significant injury. Do not give seasoned or salty leftovers, especially food containing garlic or onion. VCA’s guidance on food and treats for training cats lists cooked seafood among foods cats may enjoy and advises serving foods without seasonings and preferably low in calories. The WSAVA Nutrition Committee’s 2025 cat-treat guide warns about bones and raw animal treats.
How much seafood can a cat eat?
There is no established safe seafood amount in grams or ounces that applies to every cat. Use calories, not a guessed fish portion, to manage the treat. WSAVA recommends that treats make up no more than 10% of daily calories; Cornell gives a general rule of thumb of 10–15%. The stricter 10% ceiling is a sensible general limit, not a seafood-specific dose.

Your cat’s calorie needs depend on the individual. Ask your veterinary team what daily calorie target and treat allowance fit your cat, particularly if weight or health is a concern. Count seafood alongside all other treats rather than giving it on top of the daily allowance. Treats should not displace meals: WSAVA emphasizes that every cat needs a complete-and-balanced diet.
Can cats eat tuna?
Do not make human canned tuna a routine snack, and use particular caution with kittens. VCA warns that regular tuna feeding can be dangerous for kittens because of mercury concerns and notes that tuna is not nutritionally complete as a treat. This is not evidence that every seafood exposure is toxic, nor does the guidance quantify a toxic dose.

Cornell reports that some cats consuming canned fish products intended for people have developed potentially serious neurological disorders. Its page does not identify the fish product, amount, or mechanism, so the warning should not be expanded into a claim about all fish or every occasional bite. See VCA’s kitten guidance on human foods, VCA’s explanation of tuna as a cat food, and Cornell’s feeding guidance, updated April 30, 2026.

Is seafood cat food different from seafood as a treat?
Yes. A small treat is not the same as feeding human seafood as a meal or building a regular diet around fish. Seafood in a cat food’s ingredient list does not, by itself, show that the food is nutritionally complete. For regular feeding, check the package’s nutritional-adequacy statement and confirm that the food is complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage.

Cornell notes that homemade cat diets are difficult to balance and generally recommends nutritionally balanced commercial food unless a veterinarian recommends a professionally formulated home recipe. Treats, including seafood, should remain occasional extras rather than substitutes for a balanced diet. Read Cornell’s guide to feeding cats for its discussion of nutrition and food labels.

- Your cat eats a veterinary-prescribed diet, has a health condition, or has food sensitivities: clear any treats with the veterinary team first.
- Your cat may have eaten a harmful ingredient or a substantial amount of unsafe food: call a veterinarian or emergency veterinary service promptly. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional directs you to.
- You are unsure how many calories your cat should receive: ask the veterinary team for an individual target before setting a treat budget.
Cornell’s common-cat-hazards guidance advises contacting a veterinarian immediately when poisoning is suspected.
