Do not serve it raw or undercooked, and do not use steak in place of complete-and-balanced cat food. Keep treats within 10–15% of your cat’s daily calories, a general guideline from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine—not a steak-specific serving target.
Can cats eat cooked steak?
Plain, lean beef that is fully cooked and free of bones and seasoning can be shared in a small amount. The ASPCA says small amounts of lean cooked beef without bones or seasoning are okay for pets, and VCA lists cooked meats among foods cats may safely enjoy. These are general pet-feeding guidelines, not an individual medical recommendation.

Serve only the meat itself. Remove visible bones and avoid sauces, marinades, salt, and other seasonings. There is no steak-specific cooking temperature established in the cited guidance, so do not treat a particular temperature or degree of doneness as a cat-specific safety threshold.
Raw or undercooked steak is not a safe choice
Cornell’s Feline Health Center advises against feeding cats raw meat, including as a treat, because it can transmit toxoplasmosis and other infectious diseases. Cooking the steak thoroughly is the safer choice; rare or raw steak is not recommended.

How much steak can a cat have?
Cornell gives a general guideline that treats should make up no more than 10–15% of a cat’s daily calories. That ceiling applies to treats overall; it does not specify a steak portion by weight or calories. The sources do not establish a steak-specific ounce, gram, or calorie serving, so avoid relying on a universal portion estimate.
Keep the piece small and occasional, and account for it alongside any other treats your cat gets. If your cat has a medical condition, food sensitivity, or prescribed diet, ask your veterinarian before offering steak.

Steak as a treat, not a meal
Steak alone is not a complete feline diet. Cats need a range of nutrients, and Cornell recommends complete-and-balanced commercial food for most cats. Homemade or meat-only diets can have nutrient imbalances unless they are appropriately formulated. A bit of steak can be an extra; it should not replace your cat’s regular food.

| Steak type or preparation | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fully cooked, plain, boneless beef | Offer only a small amount as an occasional treat. | ASPCA guidance allows small amounts of lean cooked beef without bones or seasoning. |
| Raw or undercooked beef | Avoid it. | Cornell warns raw meat can transmit toxoplasmosis and other infectious diseases. |
| Seasoned, sauced, or marinated steak | Do not share it; set aside plain meat before seasoning if you plan to offer any. | ASPCA’s guidance specifies cooked beef without seasoning. |
| Bone-in steak or bones from a cooked steak | Remove bones and do not give them to your cat. | Bones can cause choking or intestinal hazards; cooked bones may splinter and cause obstruction or perforation. |
| Processed beef, such as lunch meat | Do not use it as a substitute for plain steak. | Processed meats can be high in salt, according to ASPCA guidance. |
What veterinary guidance says
The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s general guidance says: “Small amounts of lean cooked chicken, turkey, beef or pork that are free of bones and seasoning are also okay.” That guidance supports offering a little plain cooked beef, but it does not make steak nutritionally necessary or suitable for every cat.
