Yes. Cats can get upper respiratory infections (URIs), often called cat colds. They are usually caused by feline viruses—not by a human cold—and may also involve bacteria. Sneezing, congestion, eye or nose discharge, and reduced appetite are common signs. Breathing difficulty is an urgent warning sign.

What a cat cold is—and what causes it

“Cat cold” is a common name for a feline upper respiratory infection, not one specific illness. The most common viral causes are feline herpesvirus type 1 and feline calicivirus. Veterinary guidance from VCA Animal Hospitals estimates that these two viruses account for about 90% of feline upper respiratory infections. Common bacterial causes include Bordetella bronchiseptica and Chlamydophila felis.

These infections are not simply human colds passed to cats. A cat’s symptoms can also have causes other than a URI, so a veterinarian may need to examine the animal to identify the problem.

Signs to watch for

  • Sneezing or nasal congestion
  • Discharge from the nose or eyes; it may be clear or purulent
  • Conjunctivitis, squinting, or irritated eyes
  • Reduced appetite, which can happen when congestion dulls a cat’s sense of smell
  • Lethargy, fever, or enlarged lymph nodes
  • Mouth ulcers, which can occur with some infections
  • Difficulty breathing, a serious warning sign

How long a cat cold may last

VCA reports an incubation period of 2–10 days. An uncomplicated infection typically lasts 7–14 days, though signs may continue for as long as 21 days in some cases. These are general ranges, not a forecast for an individual cat. An infected cat may spread the illness to other cats during this period.

What you can do at home

For an uncomplicated case, a veterinarian may recommend supportive care at home. These measures can make a cat more comfortable; they do not cure the infection.

  • Ease congestion with humidified air. VCA describes sitting with the cat in a steamy bathroom for 10–15 minutes several times a day.
  • Gently clean discharge. Use a moist tissue to wipe the face or eyes and reduce irritation.
  • Encourage eating. Offer palatable canned food; a stronger smell may appeal to a cat whose congestion has dulled its sense of smell. If your cat will not eat adequately, contact a veterinarian.

Do not give human cold medicine or other medication without veterinary direction. Lysine is not an established treatment: Cornell’s respiratory infection guidance notes that several studies suggest it is ineffective and may worsen symptoms and promote viral shedding.

What veterinary treatment may involve

Treatment depends on the cause and severity. Antibiotics do not treat viruses, but a veterinarian may prescribe them for a bacterial cause or a secondary bacterial infection. Antiviral medication, eye medication, or other treatment may be appropriate in selected cases. A cat that is severely ill, dehydrated, or markedly depressed may need hospitalization and fluid support.

When to contact a veterinarian urgently

Seek prompt veterinary care if your cat is struggling to breathe. Cornell emergency and critical care faculty member Daniel Fletcher, DVM, warns that a cat showing breathing difficulty “is at high risk of dying if the respiratory problem is not treated promptly.” He discourages owners from trying to resolve breathing difficulty at home. Cornell’s guidance on dyspnea emphasizes that a veterinarian must examine the cat and determine the cause and appropriate treatment.

Contact a veterinarian promptly as well if your cat appears dehydrated or markedly depressed, seems severely ill, or is not eating adequately. Difficult or rapid breathing can have causes beyond an upper respiratory infection. Cornell’s respiratory infection page says a resting respiratory rate “should not exceed 35 breaths per minute at rest.” Treat that as source-specific guidance, not a diagnosis by itself; breathing difficulty warrants veterinary attention regardless of a count.

How cat colds spread—and how to reduce transmission

Infectious agents can spread between cats through direct contact and secretions from the nose, eyes, or mouth. Shared bowls, litter boxes, toys, and bedding can also become contaminated. Keep a sick cat separate from other cats, wash your hands, and clean shared items.

VCA recommends isolating a new cat from resident cats for 1–2 weeks and arranging a veterinary examination during that period. Vaccination can reduce the severity of illness but cannot prevent every infection.

Why infections can recur

Feline herpesvirus can remain in a cat for life. Cornell reports that up to 97% of cats are exposed during their lifetime; infection becomes lifelong in up to 80% of exposed cats, and up to 45% of those cats periodically shed virus, usually under stress. These are Cornell-reported estimates, and they help explain why signs may recur or spread even after an earlier illness has improved.
