In the United States, CDC says cats and dogs are not known to become infected with hantavirus. A cat can still bring a rodent into the home, so the main concern is contact with the rodent and its urine, droppings, saliva, or nesting material—not treating the cat as a known carrier.

Keep your cat away while you handle rodent contamination, and never sweep or vacuum droppings. Wet the material with an appropriate disinfectant, let it soak, and follow CDC cleanup guidance; contact a veterinarian about your cat’s health or local health officials for a heavy infestation.

Can cats get hantavirus?

CDC says dogs and cats are not known to become infected with hantavirus in the United States. This is a U.S.-specific statement; it should not be generalized to every country or hantavirus. If your cat has symptoms after contact with a rodent, a veterinarian can assess the animal, but the exposure alone does not establish hantavirus infection. CDC’s Clinician Brief: Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome provides the cat-specific guidance.

Hantaviruses are a family of viruses spread mainly by rodents. Some can cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which affects the lungs, while others cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, which chiefly affects the kidneys. The exact viruses and transmission patterns vary by region. CDC’s hantavirus overview explains the diseases and exposure routes.

Can my cat bring hantavirus into the house?

A pet may bring an infected rodent indoors. People can be exposed to germs in rodent urine, droppings, saliva, or nesting material, including when contaminated material is stirred up during cleanup. CDC does not identify ordinary contact with a cat as a hantavirus transmission route; focus on avoiding rodent contamination and cleaning it safely.

Rodents may carry germs even when they look healthy. They can spread disease through bites, handling, or contact with urine, droppings, and saliva; contaminated material may also be inhaled or ingested. Rodents can carry fleas, ticks, and mites that spread other diseases. CDC rodent-control guidance describes these risks.

Other rodent-related illnesses

Hantavirus is not the only concern around rodents, but the risks differ by disease and location. A cat catching a mouse does not mean the cat is infected. Ask your veterinarian about an individual exposure, especially if the cat ate a wild rodent or becomes ill.

Illness or risk Relevant exposure What to know
Leptospirosis Rodents can carry and spread the bacteria; animals may encounter contaminated material. CDC recommends limiting animals’ access to rodents and controlling rodent problems.
Tularemia Associated with rodents and other exposure routes. It is one of several rodent-associated diseases; do not assume every cat that catches a mouse is infected.
Flea-borne murine typhus People can be exposed through infected fleas, including Oriental rat fleas and cat fleas. This is a flea-borne risk, not direct hantavirus transmission from cats.
Other flea-, tick-, and mite-borne diseases Rodents may carry ticks, mites, and fleas that spread germs. Reduce rodent activity and discuss appropriate parasite prevention with your veterinarian.

For disease details and regional advice, consult the relevant public-health authority. CDC’s pages cover leptospirosis, tularemia, and murine typhus.

How to clean mouse droppings safely

  1. Keep pets and people away. Do not let your cat investigate the contaminated area while you prepare to clean.
  2. Ventilate an enclosed building. CDC advises airing it out for 30 minutes before cleaning.
  3. Put on rubber or plastic gloves.
  4. Wet the material. Spray droppings or urine with a bleach solution or an EPA-registered disinfectant until very wet. Let it soak for five minutes or follow the product label.
  5. Wipe and disinfect. Use paper towels to pick up the wet material. Mop or sponge hard surfaces with disinfectant.
  6. Dispose and wash up. Follow CDC directions for bagging and disposing of waste, then wash your hands after removing gloves.

Do not sweep or vacuum rodent droppings, urine, or nesting material; doing so can put contaminated particles into the air. For a dead rodent or nest, use CDC’s separate instructions for spraying, soaking, double-bagging, and disposal. Heavy infestations require additional precautions: consult CDC’s detailed cleanup guidance and local health officials rather than improvising.

How to reduce rodent exposure around cats

  • Exclude rodents from the home and address entry points.
  • Reduce access to food and places where rodents can nest.
  • Keep your cat away from wild rodents and contaminated areas where practical.
  • For ongoing rodent activity or an infestation, seek local public-health guidance or a qualified pest-control professional.

CDC recommends rodent control and keeping wild rodents out of homes. For advice about flea or tick prevention for your cat, ask your veterinarian rather than choosing a product based on another animal’s treatment.

FAQ

Can my cat give me hantavirus?

CDC says cats and dogs are not known to become infected with hantavirus in the United States. A cat can bring a rodent into the home, however, so avoid contact with the rodent and its contaminated waste.

No. Sweeping or vacuuming can put contaminated particles into the air. Wet the material with an appropriate disinfectant, let it soak, and follow CDC cleanup instructions.

What should I do if my cat catches or eats a mouse?

Keep the cat away from any remaining rodent and contaminated area. If your cat becomes ill or you are concerned about the animal or its exposure, contact a veterinarian. The risk depends on the location and circumstances.

Does every mouse carry hantavirus?

No. The dossier does not support assuming that every rodent is infected. Still, rodents may carry germs even when they appear healthy, so use safe cleanup practices for rodent waste.
