Can Cats Have Poppy Seeds? What to Know About Risks and Next Steps

Veterinary guidance warns about poppy-plant ingestion but does not set a safe amount or seed-specific risk level for cats. Here’s what to do if your cat may have eaten some.

There is no established safe amount or seed-specific toxicity level for cats. Pet Poison Helpline warns that eating poppy plants can cause gastrointestinal upset and effects on the central nervous system, but its guidance does not separately assess culinary poppy seeds. If your cat may have eaten poppy seeds or other poppy material, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service for advice specific to the product and amount.

What the available guidance says about poppy seeds

Pet Poison Helpline’s guidance concerns Papaver poppy plants. It says that alkaloids differ among poppy species and that ingestion of any part of a poppy plant can cause gastrointestinal upset and central nervous system effects. The reference does not establish whether food-grade poppy seeds pose the same risk, give a dose threshold for cats, or compare seeds with other plant parts.

That distinction matters: a warning about poppy plants should not be treated as proof that a particular amount of culinary seeds is either safe or poisonous to a cat. Do not use this guidance to infer a safe serving or to predict what will happen after a small taste.

Signs associated with poppy-plant ingestion

Pet Poison Helpline lists inappetence, sedation, ataxia (poor coordination), and coma with very large ingestions, along with gastrointestinal upset and central nervous system effects. These are signs reported in its plant-toxicity guidance; they are not a seed-specific forecast, and they do not mean every exposure will cause symptoms.

The ASPCA notes more generally that plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset in cats and dogs. If your cat seems unwell after a suspected exposure, seek veterinary advice promptly rather than trying to diagnose the cause at home.

What to do if your cat ate poppy seeds

  1. Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service. Explain that the exposure may have involved culinary poppy seeds, and ask for case-specific guidance. The ASPCA recommends contacting a veterinarian or poison control for suspected poisoning.
  2. Keep the details handy. Retain the food packaging or, if relevant, identify the plant. Estimate how much your cat may have eaten and when the exposure occurred. These details can help the professional assess the situation.
  3. Do not try a home treatment unless instructed. Pet Poison Helpline says not to induce vomiting without consulting a veterinarian or its service. Do not give a home antidote or other treatment on your own.
  4. Follow the professional’s directions. The available sources do not establish a seed-specific safe amount or a home-treatment protocol for cats.

Pet Poison Helpline’s service page lists a fee of $89 USD per incident; fees can change, so confirm the current cost on its site. A veterinarian can also advise you on the appropriate next step for your cat.
