Yes—cats sweat, chiefly through glands in their paw pads. The damp prints an excited cat sometimes leaves are real, but paw sweating does little to cool the body. Cats mainly manage heat through grooming; panting or drooling can also occur. Wet paws alone do not show that a cat is dangerously hot or ill.
How cats sweat—and what it does
The Merck Veterinary Manual explains that cats “have sweat glands on the feet that may have a minor role in cooling the body.” When a cat is excited, sweat from the paws can leave visible wet prints on a surface. This is different from the widespread sweating people rely on: paw sweat is not a cat’s main cooling system.

Cats primarily regulate temperature by grooming. Saliva spread over the coat can help with cooling; panting or drooling may also occur. These behaviors do not make persistent or excessive panting harmless.

Not by themselves. Damp paw prints can occur when a cat is excited, and paw moisture alone is not a validated way to diagnose heat illness, fever, anxiety, or another problem. Consider how your cat is acting and whether there are other signs of illness or heat distress.

If your cat seems unwell, contact a veterinarian. Excessive panting, difficulty breathing, weakness or collapse, drooling, vomiting, or diarrhea warrant urgent attention.
Why panting needs attention
Unlike a wet paw print, open-mouth breathing or panting can be a warning sign. Cornell’s Feline Health Center notes that it may indicate dyspnea—significant difficulty breathing—which can have many causes and requires veterinary assessment. Do not assume panting is simply a normal way for your cat to cool off, even if it follows heat or activity.

How to keep a cat cool in hot weather
For prevention and comfort
- Keep fresh water available.
- Provide shade and, during extreme heat when possible, access to a cool indoor space, ideally air-conditioned.
- A cat cooling mat can offer an optional cool place to rest, but it is a comfort measure—not a substitute for these steps or veterinary care.
If you suspect heatstroke
Heatstroke can become life-threatening quickly. Cornell advises moving the cat to a cool area with a draft, gently wetting the fur with cool—not very cold—water, and contacting a veterinarian immediately. VCA also advises using cool rather than cold water while seeking veterinary care. Treat suspected heatstroke as an emergency; do not wait to see whether a cooling mat or rest is enough.

- Seek urgent veterinary care for excessive panting, breathing difficulty, weakness or collapse, marked distress, drooling, vomiting, or diarrhea—especially during hot weather.
- Ask your veterinarian for advice if your cat seems unwell even without these signs. Damp paws alone cannot identify the cause or establish that a cat is ill.
This is general veterinary information, not a diagnosis. A veterinarian can assess breathing problems and other concerning symptoms and determine what care is needed.
