Can Cats Take Human Antibiotics? What Owners Need to Know

Human antibiotics and leftover prescriptions are not do-it-yourself treatments for cats. Learn when a veterinarian may direct their use and what to do after a possible ingestion.

No—not unless your cat’s veterinarian specifically tells you to use a particular medicine. Don’t give your cat your prescription, leftover antibiotics, or another pet’s medication, and don’t try to work out a cat dose from a human label. A veterinarian needs to decide whether an antibiotic is appropriate and prescribe instructions for your cat.

Why you shouldn’t give a cat human antibiotics on your own

A drug’s name or its use in people does not establish that it is suitable for your cat, that your cat has a bacterial infection, or how much to give. Medication instructions differ by species and weight, so a human prescription or tablet strength is not a safe basis for calculating a feline dose. VCA Animal Hospitals advises against giving pets antibiotics prescribed for people or another pet and recommends veterinary assessment when infection is suspected. Read VCA’s antibiotic-use guidance.

Cornell University’s Feline Health Center gives the same precaution: “Remember: never give your cat medications without first consulting your veterinarian.” Cornell’s common cat hazards guidance explains why human medications can pose a risk to cats.

Can a veterinarian prescribe a medicine also used in people?

Yes. The key difference is that the veterinarian has assessed the cat and directs the treatment. A veterinarian may prescribe a medicine for veterinary use, including off-label use where appropriate. VCA notes that off-label uses are not reviewed or approved by the FDA or Health Canada, and owners should follow the veterinarian’s instructions and cautions carefully. VCA’s cefadroxil information explains off-label use.

Antibiotics are not right for every illness

Antibiotics work against bacteria; they do not treat viruses, fungi, or parasites. Symptoms alone cannot tell you whether an antibiotic is needed. Your veterinarian can determine the cause of your cat’s illness and whether antibiotic treatment is warranted. Using antibiotics only as directed also helps reduce the risk of antimicrobial resistance. VCA explains when antibiotics work for cats.

What to do if your cat swallowed an antibiotic

  1. Call your veterinarian promptly. If the clinic is unavailable or you’re unsure what to do, contact an animal poison-control service. For the United States, Cornell lists Pet Poison Helpline at 800-213-6680 and ASPCA Animal Poison Control at 888-426-4435; these services charge a nominal fee. Confirm current availability, service area, and charges when you call. Cornell’s small animal toxins guidance lists these contacts.
  2. Have the product details ready. Keep the package or label nearby and report the drug name, strength, amount that may have been swallowed, when it happened, your cat’s weight, and how your cat is acting. These details help a professional assess the exposure; they do not replace professional advice.
  3. Don’t try a home remedy. Don’t induce vomiting or give anything to counteract the medicine unless a veterinary professional directs you to do so.

Possible poisoning signs listed by Cornell include lethargy, loss of appetite, bruising, nosebleeds, an irregular heartbeat, inability to urinate, and difficulty breathing. A suspected ingestion warrants a call even if your cat seems normal; signs and urgency depend on the substance and exposure. See Cornell’s feline hazards guidance.

Check with your clinic about what is compatible with the specific drug.

An oral syringe can help administer medicine prescribed for your cat; it does not make human antibiotics safe to give without veterinary direction.
