Cats can react to capsaicin, the compound that makes chili peppers feel hot, but that does not prove they taste “spicy” the way people do. In cats, the evidence points to irritation or a heat-related sensation. Spicy food can also upset a cat’s stomach, and other ingredients in a seasoned dish—especially onion or garlic—may pose separate, more serious risks.
What “spicy” means for a cat
Capsaicin can activate TRPV1 receptors, which are involved in detecting irritating or heat-related stimuli. A 2009 study reported TRPV1 in cat esophageal mucosa and examined capsaicin-induced responses. That supports the conclusion that cats are sensitive to capsaicin; it does not show exactly what a cat subjectively feels or establish “spicy” as a basic taste detected by taste buds. Read the 2009 study in the American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology.

So the careful answer is: cats can sense capsaicin’s irritating or heat-like effects, but we cannot say they experience chili as a flavor in the same way people do.

VCA Animal Hospitals advises against sharing spicy foods because they may cause stomach upset. Its guidance says: “While spicy foods may not be toxic to your cat, they’re certain to cause stomach upset, so keep the jalapeño poppers to yourself!” The source does not give a dose threshold or establish that every exposure causes the same effect, so there is no universal safe amount to rely on. Check the whole ingredient list
The chili is not necessarily the only concern. VCA specifically warns that onion and garlic can cause red blood cell and kidney damage. A seasoned meal may contain ingredients with risks distinct from capsaicin-related irritation, so identify everything in the dish rather than judging it only by how spicy it tastes.
What to do if your cat ate spicy food
- Identify what was eaten. Note the dish, approximate amount, time, and ingredients. Keep the package, recipe, or ingredient list available for the veterinary team.
- Contact a veterinarian if you are concerned. Cornell’s general guidance for suspected toxin exposure is: “Call your veterinarian immediately.” This is a prudent next step when the ingredients or your cat’s condition worry you, not a diagnosis that every taste of spicy food is an emergency. Cornell Feline Health Center: Common Cat Hazards.
- Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to. Cornell advises against doing so without professional instruction. If your regular veterinarian is unavailable and you suspect serious toxicity, Cornell lists an emergency veterinary clinic or an animal poison-control hotline as alternatives.
Keep spicy leftovers off the menu
Do not intentionally give a cat chili, hot sauce, or spicy leftovers. For routine feeding, Cornell’s guidance is to provide a nutritionally complete cat diet rather than rely on human food. Cornell Feline Health Center: Feeding Your Cat.
