The strongest explanation is that domestic cats lack a working version of the usual sweet-taste receptor. That does not mean cats lack taste: they respond to several other taste qualities, including salty, sour and bitter stimuli, as well as amino acids and nucleotides.
Why cats generally cannot taste sweet
The canonical mammalian sweet receptor is made from two components, T1R2 and T1R3. In cats, the gene that provides T1R2, Tas1r2, is disrupted, so the usual T1R2/T1R3 receptor cannot form.

Li and colleagues reported a 247-base-pair deletion in exon 3 of feline Tas1r2, along with premature stop codons in exons 4 and 6. They detected Tas1r3 in taste tissue, but did not detect Tas1r2 message or protein in their assays. The reported gene disruption was confirmed in six healthy adult domestic cats. This is molecular evidence for the receptor explanation, not a measurement of how many cats have a particular degree of taste ability.
The molecular finding is consistent with earlier evidence summarized in a 2006 review: cited taste-nerve recordings found no response to sucrose and several other sugars, while cited behavioral studies found indifference to sweet carbohydrates and high-intensity sweeteners. The careful conclusion is that cats generally do not perceive sweetness as people do—not that every possible compound has been tested or that all sensory responses are impossible.

What cats can taste
A lack of the canonical sweet receptor is not a lack of taste. The review describes feline responses to salty, sour and bitter stimuli, along with responses and preferences involving selected amino acids and nucleotides.
| Stimulus or quality | What the cited evidence reports |
|---|---|
| Sucrose and several other sugars | No response in taste-nerve recordings summarized by the 2006 review |
| Sweet carbohydrates and high-intensity sweeteners | Indifference in behavioral work summarized by the 2006 review |
| Salty, sour and bitter stimuli | Responses are described in the same review |
| Amino acids and nucleotides | Responses are described; cats also show preferences for selected amino acids |
Why might a cat approach a sweet-tasting food?
A cat’s interest in something people describe as sweet does not show that the cat tastes its sweetness. The available evidence establishes the receptor finding, but it does not identify a universal reason that an individual cat approaches any particular food. Other sensory or food properties could be involved, but the cited sources do not demonstrate which ones explain a given cat’s behavior.

- Includes varied shapes to add playful interaction during treat time.
If you want to offer a treat, PetMD’s veterinary-reviewed article suggests a meat-based cat treat as an optional alternative. That suggestion is not a need created by cats’ inability to taste sweetness.
Does the same rule apply to every carnivore?
No. A 2012 study of Carnivora found that disruption of Tas1r2 and responses to sweet compounds varied among the species studied. Some meat-eating species had disrupted versions of the gene, while species with intact sequences in that study preferred some natural sugars. “Carnivore” therefore does not mean “unable to taste sweet”; the cat finding should not be generalized to every carnivore.
