But the evidence here does not show that cats translate a human-made meow into a specific message in cat language. A meow in response means your cat reacted; it does not prove what the cat thought you said.
What cats may recognize when you meow
Several different abilities can look like understanding, but they are not the same:

- Hearing and orienting: A cat turns an ear or head toward a sound.
- Recognizing a familiar voice or speech style: A cat responds differently depending on who is speaking or how they speak.
- Learning an association: A cat comes to expect attention or another outcome after a sound it hears repeatedly.
- Understanding a literal message: A cat identifies a specific meaning in the sound, such as a human imitation meaning a particular thing in cat communication.
Studies support the first two abilities. A repeated sound could also become part of an individual learned routine. The sources discussed here do not establish the last one for human-made meows.

Cats can distinguish their owner’s voice
In a 2013 playback study, Atsuko Saito and Kazutaka Shinozuka played voice recordings to 20 domestic cats. The cats heard strangers call their names, followed by their owners doing so. Their reactions were mainly orienting movements, such as moving an ear or turning the head, rather than vocal replies. The researchers concluded that cats could distinguish people using vocal cues alone. That finding is evidence of voice recognition, not proof that cats understand a human imitation of a cat’s meow. Cats can respond differently to familiar speech styles
A 2022 playback study tested 16 companion cats. When their owner spoke, the cats distinguished speech addressed to them from speech addressed to adults. They did not appear to distinguish those styles when a stranger spoke. This suggests that experience in a particular cat-human relationship matters. It does not show that the cats understood the words, or that they decoded an imitated meow. de Mouzon and colleagues’ 2022 study
Meows do not have one universal translation
A veterinary review notes that cat vocalizations vary and that meows are more common in cat-human interactions than in many cat-cat contexts. Pitch, duration, intensity, and situation can differ; the same kind of vocalization may occur in different circumstances. It is therefore misleading to treat every meow as a word with a fixed meaning. Yeon and colleagues’ review of feline vocal communication

Why your cat might meow back
A response can have several explanations: your cat may have noticed a familiar voice, reacted to the sound’s pitch or volume, or learned that the noise often precedes attention. If you regularly meow before greeting, feeding, or playing with your cat, the sound could become a cue for that routine. That would be an individual association—not evidence of a shared human-meow vocabulary. The idea is plausible, but the sources here do not include a controlled trial showing that cats assign a specific message to human-made meows.
A cat’s reaction alone cannot tell you which explanation applies. Turning an ear, looking over, approaching, or vocalizing shows that the sound prompted a response; it does not reveal exactly what the cat inferred.

How to try it without stressing your cat
- Choose a quiet moment and make one brief, soft sound. Veterinary handling guidelines recommend a quiet environment and soft, gentle, slow human vocalizations. AAFP/ISFM Cat Friendly Veterinary Interaction Guidelines
- Pause and let your cat decide whether to come closer or engage. Do not approach or hold the cat to get a response.
- Read the whole cat, not just its voice. Notice its posture and whether it appears comfortable; if it withdraws or seems tense, stop and give it space.
- Do not repeat the sound loudly or insistently. A returned meow is a response, not confirmation that your cat understood a sentence.
What remains uncertain
The studies on owner-voice recognition and cat-directed speech are relevant to how cats respond to human voices, but they did not test whether cats understand human imitations of meows. Yeon and colleagues’ 2020 review likewise describes unanswered questions about feline vocal signals and how calls function across contexts. Its conclusion is appropriately specific: “Much more still needs to be done in the field of feline vocalization research.” Yeon and colleagues, 2020
