Yes—some cats can learn to walk outdoors on a leash, but it is not suitable for every cat. A cat should be comfortable wearing a secure harness, and any outing should be calm, supervised, and led by the cat’s own pace. If your cat is frightened or tries to escape, stop; an escape-proof outdoor enclosure or enriching indoor environment may be a better fit.
Should you walk your cat on a leash?
Guidance differs. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association recognizes supervised harness walks and outdoor enclosures as ways to offer controlled outdoor access, while emphasizing safety and each cat’s individual needs. Its 2024 indoor/outdoor lifestyle position statement says, “Safety is the primary concern when letting cats outdoors.”
RSPCA Australia generally does not recommend leash walking. Its concern is that unfamiliar dogs, people, smells, noise, and traffic may frighten a cat, while restraint can limit the cat’s ability to hide or get away. A startled cat may struggle free, be injured, or become lost. The organization’s guidance is available in Should I walk my cat on a leash?
Veterinary environmental-needs guidance from the AAFP and ISFM describes leash walking as a safe option when a cat has been positively trained to a halter and leash and is walked loosely, with choice about where to go. That means a cat-led outing—not expecting a cat to walk beside you like a dog. The AAFP and ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines date to 2013.

Which cats may enjoy a harness walk?
A relaxed, curious cat who explores willingly and remains comfortable in a harness indoors may be a better candidate than a shy or anxious cat. Temperament and the cat’s response to gradual introduction matter more than a general assumption that cats can be trained to enjoy walks. The Cat Protection Society of NSW offers practical advice in its harness and lead training factsheet.
Refusing to move, hiding, or trying to escape is not disobedience. It is a reason to pause and reassess. No reliable percentage of cats that can be trained, or validated test that predicts success, is established in the cited guidance.

How to introduce a harness and leash gradually
- Introduce a secure harness indoors. Choose one that fits snugly enough that the cat cannot twist or slip out. Attach the leash to the harness, never to a collar. Let your cat investigate the harness, pair it with treats, and increase wearing time gradually while supervising.
- Add the leash indoors. Once your cat is comfortable in the harness, attach the lead and let the cat initiate movement. Keep it loose; do not drag, steer, or pull your cat. Slow down or stop if your cat becomes uncomfortable.
- Choose a quiet outdoor spot. Start in a familiar, low-distraction place such as a garden or courtyard. Let your cat explore at its own pace while you supervise and keep the lead loose. Avoid traffic, frightening noise, and places with loose dogs.
- Have a way to retreat. Bring a soft carrier or collapsible carry basket so your cat has a retreat if it becomes stressed. End the outing if your cat hides, tries to flee, or otherwise appears distressed.
The Cat Protection Society of NSW puts the equipment rule plainly: “Always use a harness. Never attach a leash directly to a collar.”
Signs your cat may be scared or stressed
Watch your cat’s posture and behavior rather than waiting for it to walk. Relaxed posture, willing exploration, and friendly behavior can indicate comfort. A tight or lowered posture, ears held back, hiding, hissing, vocalizing, shaking, or attempts to flee can indicate fear. These practical cues, described by the BC SPCA, are not a diagnosis; if they appear, do not force your cat to stay outside or continue walking.

Leash walks, outdoor enclosures, or indoor enrichment?
The right option depends on your cat’s comfort and choice, the risks in your surroundings, and the supervision or security you can provide.
