Can Chihuahuas Eat Tuna? Safety, Risks and Better Fish Treats

Chihuahuas should not eat tuna regularly: mercury risk and the lack of a known safe serving make other cooked, boneless fish a better treat.

A Chihuahua can have a tiny accidental bite of tuna without it automatically being a poisoning emergency, but tuna is best left out of a dog’s regular diet. Repeated or large amounts raise concern because tuna can contain mercury, and the reviewed veterinary sources do not establish a safe tuna serving or feeding frequency for Chihuahuas. If your dog ate a lot, or seems unwell, contact a veterinarian.

Is tuna safe for Chihuahuas?

Veterinary guidance differs on whether to offer tuna intentionally: PetMD describes very small amounts as acceptable only as a rare treat, while the American Kennel Club (AKC) advises against feeding tuna. Both sources distinguish a small accidental taste from repeated or large exposure and cite mercury as a reason for caution. Given the lack of a Chihuahua-specific safe dose, the prudent choice is not to make tuna a planned treat.

Tuna does provide protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B12, selenium and niacin, according to PetMD’s tuna guidance. Those nutrients do not make tuna necessary: a dog eating complete, balanced food ordinarily does not need extra nutrition unless a veterinarian recommends it, notes the AKC fish guide. Tuna should not be a main food or routine ingredient.

How much tuna can a Chihuahua eat?

No reviewed source gives a safe tuna portion or frequency for Chihuahuas. Do not use a general fish portion as a tuna dose: PetMD’s small-dog example covers fish generally, not tuna specifically. Nor should human fish-serving guidance be applied to dogs.

Gootoe Fish Dog Treats, High Protein, Tuna Sticks, Grain Free, 8 oz
  • REAL FISH. HAPPY TAILS. — Made with real fish as the #1 ingredient, GooToE Fish Sticks are high protein, grain free, and easy to break by hand. The rich, natural fish aroma gets your dog's attention instantly — even the pickiest eaters. Perfect as training treats for dogs of all breeds and sizes.
  • SNACK TIME THAT QUIETLY DOES GOOD — Fish naturally delivers Omega-3 fatty acids every treat time. The tuna variety is ultra-lean at just 0.3% fat — great for dogs needing a lighter daily snack. The salmon variety offers 5% natural fish oil for richer Omega-3 skin & coat support. No supplements needed.
  • HIGH PROTEIN, LOW IN FAT — GOOD NUMBERS TO KNOW — Tuna: 40% crude protein, only 0.3% crude fat. Salmon: 36% crude protein, 5% natural fish oil. Both grain free, with no artificial preservatives, colors, or flavors. Simple, clean ingredients your dog loves and you can feel good about every single day.
  • 3 INGREDIENTS. THAT'S IT. — Fish, Coconut Glycerin, Soy Protein. Grain free, no artificial anything. Made in Vietnam to consistent quality standards. Sealed in a resealable bag so every treat stays as fresh and flavorful as the first one. Sometimes the shortest ingredient list is the best one.
  • EVEN THE FUSSIEST DOGS SAY YES — You know the ones — dogs who sniff a treat, look at you blankly, and walk away. The deep, savory aroma of real dried fish for dogs is hard to say no to, even for them. Snaps apart easily for smaller portions or smaller breeds. A little joy, perfectly portioned.

Tuna type matters, but it does not make a serving recommendation possible. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says albacore, also called white tuna, typically contains three times more mercury than canned light tuna. That comparison is for human food guidance and does not establish a safe canine dose. See the FDA/EPA fish advice.

Which tuna preparations should dogs avoid?

  • Raw tuna: Raw fish can carry bacteria or parasites, according to the AKC tuna guidance.
  • Oil-packed tuna: Oil may upset a dog’s stomach and may contribute to pancreatitis, particularly if a large amount is eaten, according to PetMD.
  • Salty, seasoned or mixed tuna: Canned products can contain added salt or preservatives. Avoid tuna salad and seasoned preparations; ingredients such as onion or garlic can be harmful to dogs, and extra fat, oil and salt are unnecessary. See the AKC fish guidance and PetMD’s tuna guidance.

What if your Chihuahua ate tuna?

For a small stolen bite, first work out approximately how much was eaten and check the package or recipe for the tuna type, packing liquid and other ingredients. A small accidental taste is not automatically an emergency, but contact your veterinarian promptly after a large intake or if your dog develops concerning signs. Do not try home treatment based on an assumed mercury dose.

Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy, tremors or difficulty walking, symptoms listed by PetMD. The AKC also lists loss of coordination, vision changes, vomiting blood, and bloody or watery diarrhea. If any of these occur, seek veterinary advice.

What fish treats are better options?

PetMD names salmon, whitefish, herring, flounder and Arctic char as alternative fish choices. Prepare fish thoroughly, remove all bones, and serve it without added oil or seasoning. The AKC fish guide says treats should make up no more than 10% of a dog’s daily diet; this is a general treat guideline, not a tuna allowance.

Ask your veterinarian before changing the diet of a dog with a health condition or prescription food. Puppies and dogs with health concerns also warrant extra care around new foods. If your goal is to add omega-3s, discuss whether a fish oil supplement is appropriate rather than assuming a tuna treat is needed.
