Keep chocolate and caffeine, grapes and raisins, xylitol, onions and garlic, and macadamia nuts away from your dog. Fatty or very salty foods, some dairy products, and bones also carry risks. For treats, choose food formulated for dogs rather than sharing from the table.
Which human snacks are unsafe for dogs?
Risk depends on the ingredients, the amount eaten, your dog’s size and health, and how long ago the snack was eaten. The foods below are important hazards, not a complete list of everything that could harm a dog.
| Snack or ingredient | Why it is risky | What to do after ingestion |
|---|---|---|
| Chocolate, cocoa, and caffeinated products | Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine. Risk varies with the dog’s size, the amount eaten, and the product; darker, more bitter chocolate generally poses greater risk. | Contact a veterinarian promptly. Provide the product type and estimated amount. Cornell’s chocolate guidance |
| Grapes, raisins, sultanas, and Zante currants | They can cause acute kidney injury. A toxic dose has not been established, and dogs differ in sensitivity. | Treat any ingestion as potentially serious and call a veterinarian or veterinary poison-control service promptly. Cornell’s grape and raisin guidance |
| Foods or products containing xylitol | This sweetener can cause dangerously low blood sugar and liver injury. It may be found in sugar-free gum, candy, baked goods, and some non-food products. | Seek immediate veterinary or poison-control advice if ingestion is suspected. Check and bring the package or ingredient list. Cornell’s xylitol guidance |
| Onion, garlic, chives, and related alliums | They can irritate the digestive tract and damage red blood cells. | Avoid feeding them; contact a veterinary professional if your dog eats them. ASPCA’s list of foods to avoid |
| Macadamia nuts | They are toxic to dogs and can cause weakness, incoordination, vomiting, and other signs. | Do not offer them; seek veterinary advice if eaten. Cornell’s holiday hazards guidance |
| Fatty or greasy foods | They can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or pancreatitis. | Avoid sharing. Call a veterinarian if your dog ate a substantial amount or develops symptoms. Cornell’s holiday hazards guidance |
| Very salty snacks | Excess salt can cause illness and abnormal electrolyte levels. | Do not share them; seek veterinary advice after a significant ingestion or if symptoms occur. ASPCA’s list of foods to avoid |
| Dairy products | Some pets have difficulty digesting dairy because they produce limited lactase, so it may cause digestive upset. | Use caution and stop offering it if it causes symptoms. ASPCA’s food guidance |
| Bones, raw meat, and raw eggs | Bones can injure or obstruct the digestive tract. Raw meat and eggs may carry harmful bacteria. | Do not offer them casually; ask your veterinarian about appropriate diet choices. ASPCA’s food guidance |
What should I do if my dog ate a dangerous snack?
- Contact your veterinarian or a veterinary poison-control center promptly. Do this especially for suspected chocolate, grape or raisin, or xylitol ingestion; do not wait for symptoms before seeking advice.
- Gather the details. Share the product name, ingredient list or packaging, estimated amount eaten, when it happened, and your dog’s approximate weight.
- Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional tells you to. It may be inappropriate in some cases. Follow the professional’s specific instructions. Cornell’s first-aid guidance
Cornell’s guidance pages list the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435 and Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661. Confirm current contact details and availability with the service or your veterinarian.
What can I give my dog instead of table snacks?
Choose treats specially formulated for dogs, and follow the product’s feeding directions. Cornell advises sticking with dog-formulated treats and asking guests not to give food from the table. A treat that is suitable for one dog may not suit another, so ask your veterinarian if your dog has health or dietary needs.

In ASPCA exposure data for 2024, human food and drinks accounted for 16.1% of reported exposures, and chocolate accounted for 13.6%. These percentages describe exposures reported to ASPCA in that year; they are not population-wide incidence rates or an individual dog’s probability of being harmed. ASPCA’s 2024 exposure report
