Yes—dogs can eat fully cooked, plain, boneless salmon in moderation. Do not feed raw or undercooked salmon: it can carry parasites and bacteria, including the organism behind salmon poisoning disease. For most dogs, salmon is best treated as an occasional addition, not a regular substitute for complete and balanced food. Ask your veterinarian before feeding it routinely, especially if your dog has a health condition or follows a prescription diet.

How to prepare salmon safely

Cook salmon thoroughly, let it cool, and remove every bone before serving. The American Kennel Club recommends cooking it to an internal temperature of 140°F; baking, steaming, or grilling without additions are suitable methods. Keep it plain—no seasoning, oil, or sauce. Bones can cause choking or injure the digestive tract.

Canned salmon is another option described by PetMD. Choose salmon packed in water rather than oil, check the sodium content, and consider rinsing it before serving. Avoid products with added seasonings or sauces.

How much salmon can a dog eat?

PetMD offers the following general guide for cooked, boneless salmon portions per week, based on a dog’s weight. It is broad guidance, not a guaranteed safe dose or an individual feeding prescription.

The American Kennel Club separately advises offering prepared salmon no more than once a week. These recommendations do not account for every dog’s health, total diet, or calorie needs. Salmon can be more calorie-dense than leaner proteins, so keep portions modest and ask your veterinarian what is appropriate for your dog.

Why raw or undercooked salmon is dangerous

Raw or undercooked salmon can carry parasites and bacteria. One serious risk is salmon poisoning disease, a bacterial infection associated with an infected fluke called Nanophyetus salmincola. The fluke is generally harmless unless infected with Neorickettsia helminthoeca; after a dog eats an infected fish, the flukes can embed in the intestines and the bacteria can enter the bloodstream.

According to VCA Animal Hospitals, salmon poisoning disease is most often seen in Washington, Oregon, northern California, and southern Vancouver Island. Signs typically appear within a week. The risk is not limited to salmon: VCA also identifies trout, steelhead, and Pacific giant salamanders as possible sources when infected.

If your dog ate raw salmon

Contact a veterinarian promptly rather than waiting for symptoms, particularly if you live in or recently visited a region where salmon poisoning disease occurs. The American Kennel Club advises immediate veterinary contact after raw salmon exposure. PetMD reports that the American Veterinary Medical Association does not recommend raw or undercooked fish for dogs at any life stage because of parasite and bacterial risks.

Does salmon belong in a dog’s regular diet?

Salmon provides protein and omega-3 fatty acids, and it is a common protein in commercial dog food. That does not mean adding human-food salmon regularly is right for every dog. A complete dog food formulated with salmon is different from topping a dog’s usual meals with salmon: the former is made to provide a balanced diet when its label says it is complete and balanced, while the latter may affect the overall diet without providing that balance.

Salmon is not established here as a treatment for allergies, skin problems, or joint conditions. If you are considering routine feeding, or your dog has a medical condition or prescription diet, discuss the amount and frequency with your veterinarian first. A salmon-based complete dog food may be an option to discuss if you want salmon to serve as a regular protein source.
