Yes, bottlenose dolphins can use echolocation to distinguish object shapes, and experiments show they can match objects across sight and sound. But scientists have not established that dolphins see a person as a human-like picture. A much-shared 2016 report describes a researcher-made visualization interpreted as a man—not a verified recording of what a dolphin experiences.
What does it mean for a dolphin to “see” with echolocation?
Dolphins produce clicks and detect returning echoes. Those echoes carry information about objects, including shape. In experiments, bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) have used echolocation to identify or match objects. That demonstrates sensory discrimination and recognition; it does not tell us whether a dolphin experiences the information as a visual-like image.
Cross-modal matching experiments help answer what dolphins can recognize. A dolphin samples an object using one sense, then selects its match using another—for example, echolocating on an object and choosing its counterpart by sight. Successful matching shows that information gathered through one sense can be used to recognize an object through another. It cannot directly reveal the animal’s private subjective experience.
What did the 2016 “dolphin saw a man” report show?
Kassewitz, Hyson, Reid and Barrera’s 2016 report, “A Phenomenon Discovered While Imaging Dolphin Echolocation Sounds”, describes recordings made while a dolphin echolocated on submerged objects, including an adult male human. The recordings were sent to a CymaScope laboratory, where researchers captured transient patterns and interpreted a visual rendering as depicting the man. They said features such as a weight belt could be made out.

This was an interpretation of a researcher-produced visualization of recorded sound, not a photograph of the dolphin’s perception or proof that it forms the same kind of picture a person sees. The report says the mechanism behind the phenomenon was not understood and proposes further testing with synthetic signals. Its authors also considered and argued against pareidolia, the tendency to perceive meaningful forms in ambiguous patterns; that argument is their interpretation, not an independently established conclusion.

Cross-modal object recognition
A 1998 study by Herman, Pack and Hoffmann-Kuhnt tested a bottlenose dolphin matching complex objects across vision and echolocation. Matching was errorless or nearly so for 24 of 25 familiar pairings. On the first trial, recognition occurred for 20 pairings in visual-to-echolocation matching and 24 in echolocation-to-visual matching. The researchers also reported above-chance results for two unfamiliar object pairs. These findings support cross-modal object recognition in the dolphin tested; they do not establish a human-like mental image. Read the 1998 study.

Discriminating global shape
In a 2002 experiment, Pack, Herman, Hoffmann-Kuhnt and Branstetter tested objects that shared local features but differed in overall shape. Correct matching was reported on 93% of visual-to-echolocation trials and 99% of echolocation-to-visual trials in the first experiment. In a second experiment, when a match was present, performance was 94% and 95%, respectively. The authors concluded that the results supported dolphins’ representation of global object appearance. These percentages belong to those specific tasks and experiments, not to dolphins generally. Read the 2002 study.
Extracting information from echoes
A 2003 Nature paper described a method designed to distinguish direct extraction of object characteristics from echoes from learned associations between sounds and objects. Its abstract reports that the authors concluded dolphins extract object characteristics directly from echoes. This addresses how dolphins discriminate objects, not whether they experience a picture-like image. Read the paper.

How later sonar research fits in
Published 8 June 2022, a Communications Engineering study recorded echoes from dolphin object-discrimination experiments, extracted shape information, and developed biomimetic sonar using dolphin-like broadband signals and processing that incorporated prior information about sparse shapes. The authors described the work as offering tools toward compact, higher-resolution sonar imaging: “Our findings offer insights and tools towards compact higher resolution sonar imaging technologies.” It is engineering work informed by acoustic information in dolphin echoes; it does not validate the 2016 CymaScope rendering as a faithful picture of dolphin experience. Dolphins can use echolocation to distinguish shapes, and cross-modal experiments show that a bottlenose dolphin can recognize objects between echolocation and vision. The 2016 report offers a visualization that its authors interpreted as showing a submerged man, but the report’s mechanism was not understood. The available evidence therefore supports shape discrimination through echolocation, not the stronger claim that researchers have definitively captured what a dolphin sees when it echolocates on a person.
