The often-repeated “two hours” refers to a different ability: Florida Atlantic University reported that the species can tolerate complete anoxia—no oxygen—for two hours without adverse effects. It does not mean the shark walks continuously on dry land for that long.
What “walking” means for an epaulette shark
The epaulette shark (Hemiscyllium ocellatum) is a small, bottom-living reef shark. Its paired fins help it move along the seabed and over reef surfaces, including when it is briefly out of water. This fin-assisted locomotion can help the animal cross exposed reef areas or move between pools as the tide changes; it is not evidence that the shark lives on land or breathes air. Florida Atlantic University’s August 2022 summary discusses walking and anoxia tolerance as separate findings.
Epaulette sharks inhabit shallow reef flats, where ebbing tides can leave isolated pools with low oxygen, elevated carbon dioxide, and changing temperatures. Movement between nearby microhabitats may help them reach more favorable conditions. Co-author Jodie Rummer, quoted by James Cook University, described the possibility of moving to more favorable conditions as an interpretation of how locomotion could help the shark cope with habitat challenges—not as proof that it is a terrestrial animal.
What the two-hour claim actually describes
Florida Atlantic University’s 2022 account says epaulette sharks can survive complete anoxia for two hours without adverse effects. Anoxia means no oxygen; it is a physiological tolerance, not a measure of how long the animal can walk on land or remain dry. The source does not establish a universal out-of-water time limit.

Other published summaries give different durations in different contexts. The Florida Museum of Natural History’s species profile, revised in 2019, reports up to three and a half hours in low-oxygen reef-pool conditions, citing Stenslokken and colleagues (2004). Smithsonian Ocean’s July 2017 overview gives one hour without oxygen. These statements should not be treated as results from a shared protocol: low oxygen and complete absence of oxygen are distinct conditions, and the sources do not establish that their methods are directly comparable.
What scientists measured about its movement
Porter and colleagues’ 2022 study, “Aquatic Walking and Swimming Kinematics of Neonate and Juvenile Epaulette Sharks,” examined young sharks in three gaits: slow-to-medium walking, fast walking, and swimming. Published in Integrative and Comparative Biology, volume 62, issue 6, pages 1710–1724, the study compared neonates with juveniles. The researchers measured velocity, fin rotation, body bending, and tail-beat frequency and amplitude; they found those locomotor measures consistent between the two early life stages. The PubMed record identifies the paper and its publication details.

Florida Atlantic University’s account says the team tracked 13 anatomical landmarks along the fins, girdles, and body midline. Although a neonate’s yolk-supported body shape changes as it develops into the more slender juvenile form associated with active foraging, the reported locomotion mechanics remained comparable. These results concern aquatic gait measurements in neonates and juveniles; they are not a demonstration of prolonged walking on dry land or proof of resilience to climate change.
How to recognize the species
The Florida Museum describes the epaulette shark as slender, cream or brown, and covered in small dark spots. Its most distinctive markings are two conspicuous dark patches above the pectoral fins—the “epaulettes” behind its common name. The profile reports a western Pacific range around northern Australia and New Guinea, extending south along eastern Australia to Sydney; it notes that some additional range reports need confirmation.

The same profile lists shallow coral-reef habitat down to 40 metres, a maximum length of 107 centimetres (42.1 inches), and a diet that includes crustaceans, small fish, and polychaete worms. It is generally active around dusk and dawn. The Florida Museum describes the shark as harmless to people, though it may bite if handled; observe wildlife without trying to touch, capture, or remove it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the evidence does—and does not—show
- Supported: Epaulette sharks use their paired fins to walk along reef surfaces, including during brief emergence from water.
- Separate finding: Sources report tolerance of oxygen-depleted conditions, with duration claims varying by source and stated context.
- Not established by these findings: That the shark walks continuously on dry land for two hours, breathes air, or lives outside a marine habitat.
As senior author Marianne E. Porter put it, “Studying epaulette shark locomotion allows us to understand this species’– and perhaps related species’– ability to move within and away from challenging conditions in their habitats.” The emphasis is on movement within a changing reef environment, not a shark leaving the sea for a life on land.
