Can Freshwater Fish See Red Light? What the Evidence Shows

Some freshwater fish respond to red light, but there is no universal cutoff or nighttime lighting rule. Species and test conditions matter.

Yes—some freshwater fish can detect or respond to red light, but sensitivity varies by species and by how it is tested. There is no single red-light cutoff for all freshwater fish, and a response to a red stimulus does not by itself prove a fish sees it as the same color or brightness a person does.

What “seeing red” means in fish studies

Researchers assess vision in different ways. They may measure photoreceptors’ sensitivity to particular wavelengths, or test whether a fish behaves differently when presented with a light or target. These results answer related but distinct questions: a physiological response does not necessarily establish color discrimination, while a behavioral response applies to the species and conditions tested.

Visible red and near-infrared are also not interchangeable. Some findings described as long-wavelength sensitivity extend into near-infrared wavelengths; they should not be read as proof that fish see all infrared light as visible red.

Evidence varies across freshwater species

Behavioral responses across multiple species

A 2021 optomotor-response study tested 13 fish species, including medaka, goldfish, zebrafish, guppy, cichlids, and bronze corydoras. Eight of the 13 tested species were positive for an optomotor response. In more detailed analyses, long-wavelength sensitivity differed among species, with reported thresholds from 750 to 880 nm for several analyzed fish. Those are study-specific results, including near-infrared wavelengths—not a universal limit for freshwater fish. The researchers also reported that opsin repertoire affected red-light perception. Largemouth bass and a red target

A 2019 study of largemouth bass found maximum sensitivity at 535 nm in single cones, 614 nm in twin cones, and 528 nm in rods. The researchers also found behavioral evidence that bass could distinguish a red target from achromatic stimuli under their training and testing conditions. This supports the specific conclusion that largemouth bass used a red color cue in that experiment; it does not establish the same ability or conditions for every freshwater species. Read the bass study.

Why some fish may be more sensitive to long wavelengths

In some fish and amphibians, the enzyme Cyp27c1 converts vitamin A1 to vitamin A2, a change associated with increased sensitivity to longer wavelengths, including red and infrared light. Washington University School of Medicine reported that zebrafish with normal copies of the gene moved toward infrared light in a dark-aquarium experiment. This is evidence about a particular biological mechanism and the animals studied, not a trait established for all freshwater fish. Washington University’s report explains the finding.

What aquarium-light experiments show

A 2011 study raised juvenile barramundi for nine weeks in blue, red, yellow, or green aquaria, then assessed spectral sensitivity, color preference, and growth. Before the experiment, the fish were reported to have cone sensitivity peaks at 472 ± 6 nm, 580 ± 10 nm, and 595 ± 10 nm, and a rod peak at 516 ± 8 nm. The study reported an inherent preference for blue and green; fish reared in red tanks showed a trend toward spending less time in red and yellow quadrants. These findings concern juvenile barramundi and that study’s setup. They do not establish how other aquarium species will respond to red lighting or provide a general lighting prescription. Read the barramundi study.

If you use a red aquarium LED light or an aquarium light with a red channel, treat it as a lighting condition to evaluate for your particular species—not as invisible light or a proven nighttime option. The cited studies do not establish that red light is suitable for every fish at night, nor do they give a general duration or husbandry recommendation.

Does red light work at night?

Not as a blanket assumption. Rods generally serve dim-light vision, while cones are used in brighter conditions, but that general distinction does not predict how a particular fish responds to a red lamp after dark. The University of Queensland describes this rods-and-cones distinction, while emphasizing that it is background rather than species-specific proof about aquarium lighting. Learn about rods and cones.

So red light should not be treated as automatically invisible to fish at night. The available findings do not support a universal rule for nighttime aquarium use; species, brightness, adaptation, and the way vision is measured all matter.
