Can Guinea Pigs Eat Dandelions? Safety, Serving, and Calcium Advice

Yes—guinea pigs can eat dandelion greens, but guidance differs on how cautious to be. UC Davis includes them among vegetables that may be offered in small portions; NC State flags their calcium and oxalate content and recommends smaller, rotated servings; PetMD advises avoiding them. There is no established dandelion-specific serving size or schedule, so treat them as an optional green, not a staple.

Why guidance on dandelions differs

The sources do not give one universal answer about how often to feed dandelion greens. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine lists dandelion greens among vegetables guinea pigs may eat and advises offering vegetables in small portions. NC State Veterinary Hospital rates dandelion greens very high in calcium and high in oxalates; it advises building salads around greens lower in those compounds and rotating higher-content greens in smaller quantities. PetMD takes a more restrictive position and recommends avoiding dandelions because of calcium concerns.

These are differing feeding recommendations, not proof that dandelions cause or prevent bladder stones. The sources do not establish a dandelion-specific dose or frequency that is safe for every guinea pig.

How much dandelion can I give my guinea pig?

No consistent dandelion-specific portion or feeding frequency is established by these sources. If you choose to offer greens, follow the cautious guidance: give a small amount, rotate it rather than making it a regular salad base, and favor lower-calcium, lower-oxalate greens for the main salad. Do not interpret Merck’s general adult produce guidance of 1–2 cups per day as an allowance for dandelions: that amount covers produce overall, not this one green.

What should dandelions’ place be in the diet?

Dandelion greens are optional produce, not a replacement for the foods that anchor a guinea pig’s diet. Merck Veterinary Manual’s May 2026 review describes the adult diet as high-quality grass hay, guinea pig-formulated grass-based pellets, and produce. UC Davis says quality grass hay should be available at all times.

How to prepare greens safely

  1. Wash produce well. UC Davis advises washing vegetables and fruit before feeding. Washing does not establish that a plant from a lawn or other potentially contaminated area is safe.
  2. Introduce unfamiliar greens gradually. Sudden dietary changes can cause gastrointestinal upset and loss of appetite, according to UC Davis.
  3. Offer a small portion and clear leftovers. UC Davis advises removing uneaten vegetables after a few hours.

When to ask a veterinarian first

If your guinea pig has urinary problems or a history of bladder stones, ask an exotics veterinarian what greens are appropriate for that animal. NC State’s lower-calcium, lower-oxalate guidance specifically allows for veterinary direction; a general food list cannot set an individual urinary-disease diet.

The Royal Veterinary College’s March 2021 urolithiasis diet advice lists dandelion among high-calcium foods to avoid and gives 93.5 mg calcium per 50 g portion. That figure belongs to the RVC document’s stated portion and classification; it should not be treated as a universal value for every dandelion or preparation.

Which dandelion parts are covered by this advice?

The feeding lists specifically discuss dandelion greens or dandelion as a food; they do not assess every part of the plant separately. This guidance therefore should not be read as a safety assessment of flowers, roots, or other plant parts.
