Not if they’re wild cockroaches from a home or outdoors. They may have encountered pesticides, contaminated food, parasites, or disease organisms. A captive-bred feeder roach such as a dubia roach may be offered occasionally to a compatible carnivorous or omnivorous freshwater fish, but it should not replace a balanced staple diet. There are no established controlled trials showing how feeding cockroaches affects aquarium fish.
Are cockroaches safe for aquarium fish?
Safety depends on the roach’s source and the fish’s feeding needs. Household and outdoor cockroaches are not suitable food: their exposure history is unknown, and a roach can carry unwanted organisms or contaminants into the aquarium.
A captive-bred feeder roach is a more controlled option, not a guarantee of safety. The Merck Veterinary Manual warns that wild-harvested live foods may carry parasites or other harmful organisms and recommends buying live foods from a reputable source. NSW Department of Primary Industries also advises quarantining live food before introducing it to an aquarium or pond.
Even for captive-bred roaches, direct evidence is limited. No authoritative controlled trial establishes growth, survival, or health outcomes in freshwater aquarium fish fed cockroaches specifically. Treat a feeder roach as a cautious, occasional supplement for a suitable fish—not as a proven or universally safe feed.

Which fish might eat a feeder roach?
Check the fish’s diet and feeding behavior
Consider an insect prey item only for a fish whose species-appropriate diet includes animal foods and whose feeding behavior makes it likely to take prey. Carnivorous and some omnivorous fish may be candidates. Herbivorous fish and very small-mouthed species are poor candidates.
Match the prey to the fish
The roach must be small enough for the fish to take and swallow comfortably. Choose prey smaller than the fish’s mouth opening; do not assume a fish can manage a roach just because it shows interest. If the prey is too large or the fish cannot eat it promptly, remove it rather than leaving it in the aquarium.

What could live roaches add to the diet?
Live food can provide prey-like movement that may stimulate feeding behavior, as well as animal-derived protein and fat. It can also add variety. These are general potential benefits of live foods; they have not been demonstrated specifically for cockroaches fed to freshwater aquarium fish.
Roach nutrient composition varies. A 2022 Zoo Biology study by Cerreta and colleagues analyzed four cockroach species used as food for insectivores and found differences by species, life stage, and sex. It reported crude-protein figures of 96.6% for adult Blaptica dubia and 65.3% for nymphs on the study’s analytical basis. Those figures are not guaranteed as-fed percentages for the roaches in your aquarium, and they do not establish a complete nutritional profile for fish.

How to offer a feeder roach cautiously
- Identify the fish’s needs. Confirm that its species-appropriate diet includes animal prey and that the fish can swallow the roach safely.
- Use a reputable, captive-bred feeder source. Do not collect roaches from a kitchen, basement, building, or outdoors. Follow supplier instructions for holding and handling live prey.
- Quarantine or hold the prey under controlled conditions. NSW Department of Primary Industries recommends quarantining live food before introducing it to an aquarium or pond to help prevent the spread of disease or parasites. This reduces risk; it does not establish that prey is pathogen-free.
- Offer a small amount and watch the fish. Treat the roach as an occasional supplement, and check that the fish eats it promptly.
- Remove any uneaten roach immediately. Overfeeding and uneaten food can contribute to water-quality problems. If waste increases, check water conditions and test the water as appropriate.
Why roaches should not replace staple food
The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that live foods can be a good source of protein and fat but may lack other elements needed for a complete diet. Fish fed only live food may also refuse other foods. Keep a complete commercial staple or another nutritionally balanced, species-appropriate diet as the foundation, and use live prey only as variety.

Rules depend on the organism and its origin. USDA APHIS notes that organisms used for pet food, animal feed, or fish bait may be regulated because they can transport pathogens or agricultural pests; permits or treatments may be required in some circumstances. Check the applicable rules before transporting or buying feeder organisms, especially across borders.
