Chronic itching and skin discomfort can be associated with changes such as anxiety, fear, irritability, touch sensitivity, aggression, and reduced trainability. Research does not show that skin disease is the sole cause of every behavior change, so a dog with both symptoms needs attention to skin health and behavior—not an assumption that the problem is “just training.”
How skin disease may affect behavior
Persistent itch can interrupt rest and normal activity, and repeated scratching, licking, or chewing may reflect discomfort rather than boredom or a training problem. Inflamed or damaged skin can also be painful. Itch and pain are related but distinct sensations; WSAVA describes itch as an unpleasant sensation that motivates scratching and can harm quality of life. WSAVA guidance
Behavior changes reported alongside chronic itch include fear- and anxiety-related behaviors, aggression, touch sensitivity, excitability, excessive grooming, attention-seeking, and lower trainability. These patterns are reasons to discuss behavior with a veterinarian, not proof that a skin condition caused a particular action or that every instance of aggression is itch-related.
What the studies show—and what they cannot establish
Dogs with chronic itch and atopic dermatitis
A 2022 questionnaire-based study enrolled 141 dogs older than one year with a clinical diagnosis of atopic dermatitis and pruritus lasting more than three months. Compared with a large healthy control group, the affected dogs had higher reported fear- and anxiety-related behaviors and aggression, and lower trainability. Because the study relied on owner reports and observed an association, it cannot establish that dermatitis caused those behaviors in an individual dog. Itch severity and behavior measures
An AAHA article published in 2026 summarizes a 2019 Nottingham study in which greater itch severity tracked with more hyperactivity, excessive grooming, attention-seeking, and reduced trainability. The reported associations persisted after accounting for age, sex, breed, and other health factors. This supports taking discomfort and stress seriously, but does not diagnose a primary behavioral disorder or prove a single cause. AAHA article Nottingham study summary
Other influences
AAHA also discusses a 2015 Tufts study on genetic predispositions to abnormal repetitive behaviors in some breeds. That may be one complicating factor, but it is not a general explanation for licking or chewing in any particular dog. AAHA article

What to tell your veterinarian
A clear timeline can help the veterinary team assess skin signs alongside behavior. Before the appointment, note:
- When the itching and behavior changes began, and whether one came before the other.
- Where your dog scratches, licks, or chews; whether the pattern varies by season; and any skin or ear changes.
- Whether itching disrupts sleep or daily routines.
- Changes in fear, touch sensitivity, irritability, aggression, attention-seeking, or response to training—and whether these shift during skin flares.
- Parasite prevention, previous treatments and how your dog responded, and diet history.
AAHA guidance emphasizes a comprehensive history, examination, and reassessment; tracking these details is useful context, not a home diagnosis. AAHA allergic skin disease guidelines AAHA guidance on history and pruritus patterns

Why diagnosing allergic skin disease can take time
There is no single historical or physical finding that distinguishes atopic dermatitis from food allergy. A veterinary workup may include a physical and dermatologic examination, a minimum dermatologic database, and evaluation for parasites or secondary infection, with treatment of itch and other identified problems where indicated. A diet trial or additional steps may be needed. The veterinarian uses the findings and response to care to guide the next steps; this is not a home diagnostic protocol. AAHA allergic skin disease guidelines
Follow-up matters because symptoms and response to treatment need reassessment. The 2023 AAHA guideline overview cautions that “there are likely no quick fixes or cures, only lifetime management strategies.” 2023 AAHA guideline overview

When skin care and behavior care should work together
Dermatology and behavior are not competing explanations. A veterinarian can assess itch, skin lesions, infection, parasites, allergy patterns, and treatment response while also considering when and where behavior changes occur and whether they persist as skin discomfort improves. If fear, anxiety, aggression, or repetitive behavior remains pronounced, ask about coordinated behavioral support alongside dermatologic care. AAHA article on skin disease and behavior
