It can upset their stomachs, and it does not provide the right nutrition for a growing kitten. A kitten that cannot nurse may need commercial kitten milk replacer; ask a veterinarian which product and feeding method are appropriate.
Why cow’s milk is not suitable for kittens
Mother cat’s milk is the appropriate nutrition for a nursing kitten. The ASPCA says newborn kittens get complete nutrition from their mother’s milk during their first four weeks. Cow’s milk is nutritionally different: VCA’s orphaned-kitten guidance says it has less than half the protein of mother cat’s milk, along with fewer calories, less fat, taurine, and other minerals, and more carbohydrates, including lactose. VCA: Feeding Orphaned Kittens; ASPCA: Cat Nutrition Tips.

Cats do not have significant amounts of lactase, the enzyme that breaks down lactose. Cow’s milk may therefore cause stomach upset or diarrhea in some kittens; it is not guaranteed to make every kitten ill, but it is not a suitable routine drink. ASPCA: Cat Nutrition Tips.

If a kitten is orphaned, rejected, or unable to nurse, contact a veterinarian promptly about commercial kitten milk replacer and how to feed it. VCA, whose orphaned-kitten article is attributed to the Canadian Academy of Veterinary Nutrition and was updated February 4, 2025, recommends commercial replacer over cow’s milk or homemade mixtures. ASPCA also advises seeking veterinary recommendations for the product and feeding plan. VCA: Feeding Orphaned Kittens; ASPCA: Cat Nutrition Tips.

Feeding needs depend on the kitten’s age, weight, condition, and the replacer’s directions, so a general volume or schedule cannot safely be applied to every kitten. VCA describes warming replacer to about 100°F (38°C) and feeding newborn orphans frequently, but a veterinarian should help you apply those general directions to the kitten in your care. A bottle that lets formula flow too quickly can cause aspiration, pneumonia, or death. If a kitten cannot suckle safely, get veterinary instruction rather than continuing to bottle-feed. VCA: Feeding Orphaned Kittens.
When kittens start eating solid food
Weaning is a gradual transition, not a reason to give cow’s milk. It may begin around three to four weeks of age, though individual kittens vary. ASPCA describes offering kitten milk replacer in a shallow bowl, then mixing it with kitten food to make a gruel. As the kitten eats more solids, gradually reduce the replacer. The ASPCA’s typical milestones are lightly moistened food by five to six weeks and unmoistened kitten food by eight to ten weeks; VCA puts typical full weaning from the mother’s milk at about eight weeks. These are guidelines, not a rigid timetable. ASPCA: Cat Nutrition Tips; VCA: Kitten Raising.

Do older kittens need milk?
No. Kittens should transition to age-appropriate kitten food as they wean; milk is not needed as an extra drink. VCA says most cats lose the ability to digest lactose by about 12 weeks. Even a cat that tolerates a little milk does not need it, and too much may cause intestinal upset or diarrhea. VCA: Feeding Your Cat.

What if a kitten already drank cow’s milk?
The sources identify a risk of digestive upset, not a universal toxic dose or a guaranteed outcome. If the kitten is very young or develops diarrhea, vomiting, weakness, or other concerning signs, contact a veterinarian for advice. Do not give more cow’s milk as a way to feed or hydrate the kitten.

Is goat’s milk a safe substitute?
Do not use goat’s milk as a normal replacement for kitten milk replacer. VCA says it is too low in protein and fat for kittens. Its guidance allows pasteurised goat’s milk only as an emergency measure while obtaining kitten milk replacer as soon as possible; ask a veterinarian for advice rather than relying on that exception. VCA: Kitten Raising.
