Yes. Some mullet can live and feed in freshwater lakes, especially species that tolerate a wide range of salinities, such as flathead grey mullet. But a lake can support mullet without supporting their entire life cycle: many migrate to the sea to spawn, so access to connected rivers, estuaries, or coastal waters can matter.
Are mullet freshwater or saltwater fish?
Some are both. “Mullet” refers to many species, and their habitat use varies, but several are euryhaline—able to tolerate a broad range of salinities. NOAA describes mullet generally as occurring from strictly fresh water to more than 35 parts per thousand salinity, and notes that they move offshore to spawn (NOAA, 2004).
The flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) is a well-documented example. The FAO species profile describes it as catadromous and frequently found in estuaries and freshwater environments; adults have been recorded across salinities from 0 to 75‰ (FAO species profile). That range shows the species can tolerate freshwater, not that every lake is suitable or that every mullet species shares the same tolerance.
Can mullet live in a landlocked lake?
A mullet may survive or grow in a landlocked lake if the local conditions suit it, but its presence does not prove it can complete its life cycle there. Many mullet use low-salinity waters for feeding or growing and later migrate to the sea to spawn. FAO describes spawning migrations from rivers, estuaries, lakes, or lagoons to the sea (FAO, 2010).
If a lake has no route to the sea—or barriers prevent migration—adults may be unable to reach marine spawning grounds. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says golden grey mullet (Chelon auratus) live in marine, brackish, and freshwater environments but reproduce only in ocean environments (USFWS species summary). That finding applies to golden grey mullet; it should not be assumed to describe every species called a mullet.
What determines whether mullet can live in a particular lake?
Freshwater tolerance is only one part of suitability. For a specific lake report, consider:

- Species identification: Common names can refer to different mullet species with different habitat and reproductive needs.
- Salinity: Check whether the lake is fresh throughout the year or has seasonal changes. A tolerance range for one species is not a universal threshold for all mullet.
- Water conditions: Temperature and dissolved oxygen affect whether fish can persist.
- Food and cover: A lake must provide suitable feeding and habitat conditions, not just tolerable salinity.
- Connectivity: Determine whether rivers, estuaries, or the sea are accessible, particularly if the species migrates offshore to spawn.
- Evidence of reproduction: A fish caught in a lake establishes presence, not that a resident population is reproducing there.
Can you catch mullet in a lake?
It is possible where mullet occur in freshwater, and striped mullet are listed in freshwater, estuarine, and offshore habitats by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (South Carolina DNR). Whether you may fish for or keep them depends on local rules, so check the regulations for the lake and jurisdiction before fishing.
There is no single lake-survival threshold that applies to all mullet. A reliable assessment needs the species, changing water conditions, available habitat, and whether the fish can reach any required spawning grounds.
