Senior dogs can still get the zoomies: Cornell University’s Riney Canine Health Center says these brief bursts of activity, also called frenetic random activity periods (FRAPs), are most common in puppies and young dogs but may occur occasionally throughout a dog’s life. A lively episode is a delightful sight, but by itself it does not prove a dog is healthy or reveal what caused the burst.
Why do senior dogs get the zoomies?
There is no established single explanation. Dr. Pamela J. Perry, D.V.M., a behavior resident at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says, “There is no known specific cause of FRAPs in dogs,” according to Cornell. The center says zoomies may release pent-up energy or relieve stress; excitement and under-stimulation can also be associated with them. These are possible explanations, not a diagnosis of what is happening in a particular dog.
Occasional zoomies are not exclusive to young dogs, and the sources do not establish a rate for how often senior dogs experience them. Frequent or inconvenient episodes may be a reason to consider whether an older dog’s activity and enrichment suit them, but a zoomie alone does not show that the dog is under-exercised or unwell.
How can you tell playful zoomies from distress?
Look at the dog’s whole body and the circumstances, rather than interpreting speed alone. A relaxed, wiggly dog that play-bows is more consistent with happy play. A tense dog with a tail persistently tucked may be frightened, according to the ASPCA’s guidance on behavior problems in older dogs.

If the dog seems frightened, anxious, or in pain, contact a veterinarian. A change in an older dog’s behavior also merits attention: pain, sensory loss, cognitive dysfunction, and other illness can affect behavior, and zoomies alone cannot distinguish among them.
How to keep a senior dog safe during a burst
Give the dog room to move without turning the episode into a chase or adding stimulation. Cornell’s zoomies guidance advises avoiding hazards such as stairs, slippery floors, obstacles, and roads. If possible, let the dog move in an enclosed space with secure footing.

- Keep the dog away from traffic and staircases.
- Clear obstacles and avoid slick surfaces where a slip or collision is more likely.
- Choose a secure, enclosed area rather than encouraging a run near an open door or road.
When a behavior change calls for veterinary advice
One playful burst does not diagnose cognitive dysfunction syndrome. But new or broader changes in an older dog deserve a veterinary conversation, especially when they persist or affect daily life.
Cornell’s overview of cognitive dysfunction syndrome lists possible signs including disorientation, changes in social interaction or sleep, house-soiling, altered activity such as restlessness or pacing, anxiety, and difficulty learning. These signs can overlap with other conditions. A veterinarian may examine the dog and use blood and urine tests to investigate other causes, including pain, arthritis, seizure disorders, systemic illness, or loss of vision or hearing. The AAHA senior care guidelines likewise describe cognitive dysfunction as a diagnosis that requires assessment for other disease.

AAHA estimates that about 14–22.5% of dogs older than 8 have age-related cognitive impairment. That estimate concerns cognitive impairment—not zoomies—and does not indicate that a particular dog has the condition.

Exercise and enrichment can be adapted to a senior dog’s mobility and health; more vigorous activity is not automatically better. PetMD’s senior-dog exercise guidance recommends tailoring activity to a dog’s medical needs and working with a veterinarian on an appropriate plan.

Cornell’s senior dog enrichment suggestions include food puzzles, simple tricks, scent games, and walks adjusted to the dog’s physical abilities. Match the challenge and duration to the individual dog, prioritize safe footing, and supervise food puzzles and interactive toys. These are enrichment options, not treatments for zoomies or cognitive dysfunction.
